    Embattled Detroit Mayor Resigns:

    Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick (D) pleaded guilty this morning to two felony perjury charges and agreed to resign from office, a stunning fall for a politician who was once considered one of Michigan's most promising leaders, The Post's Peter Slevin reports.

    Kilpatrick agreed to serve four months in jail, pay up to $1 million in restitution, and serve five years' probation. He also agreed not to run for office during that five-year span.

    "Yes, I lied under oath," Kilpatrick said, admitting that he perjured himself when he testified in court about a police department whistleblower case and when he denied that he was having an affair with his then-chief of staff, Christine Beatty.

    Kilpatrick's story came unraveled after the Detroit Free Press obtained text messages [see copies of the messages] sent between the mayor and Beatty that indicated a romantic relationship.

    Kilpatrick was charged in March with conspiracy, obstruction of justice, perjury and misconduct in office. Under today's plea agreement, he has two weeks to vacate city hall.

    Before his troubles, Kilpatrick had been a rising star in the Democratic Party and a mayor who received credit for tackling the city's deterioration. The Detroit city Web site lists some of what it calls "the most heralded development projects" of Kilpatrick's administration:

    "Convincing Quicken Loans, the nation's largest online mortgage lender to move its headquarters to downtown Detroit;

    Successfully closing the deal for the $180 million renovation of the historic Book-Cadillac Hotel after 20 years of failed attempts;

    Brokering a revised development agreement with three casinos that has produced more than $1 billion in new investment as they build permanent casinos in Detroit;

    Establishing the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and empowering the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation to oversee the $2 billion development of the city's once industrial heavy riverfront.

    The New York Times Travel Section recognized the city's tremendous progress when it listed Detroit in December as one of 53 "must-see" destinations around the world for 2008."

    A credit to rappers everywhere.

    Maybe he can get community service points if he works in Obama's campaign.

    Just think, a couple of weeks ago he was a SUPER DELEGATE to the Democrat National Convention. He was one of special people selected by the DNC for their leadership and service to the party. They were the ones who tilted the nomination to Obama. Now he is going to jail.

    Kwame was uninvited to the DNC by Obama. His electonic tether a moot point.

    Just once, I'd like to see the authorities refuse to "cut a deal" with these A/Hs, and just let it drag out until they can get him on a felony or something. Then _really_ put their ass away.

    They say the reason for the deal is that "The city can't afford" to let this drag out...but are they really going to be better off with the "new" leadership? Under the terms of this deal, it looks like Kilpatrick could be back in 5 years, like termites.

    The NPR liberals were bemoaning what an "agonizing experience" this is for the city...bullshit. They should be celebrating and having parades in the street. Instead, I'm surprised they aren't burning things.

    Buzz...

    It's always "Monte Hall Day" within the court system. Couldn't function without it! It's a shame, but just the way it is.

    An easy fix is money! Eliminate all entitlement programs and transfer the money into the criminal justice system.

    He also blamed Governor Granholm for going after him instead of getting new businesses into the state. HE WAS THE PROBLEM for companies not wanting to come here. We lost the mayors convention because they did not want to be a part of the Kwame mess.

    I think Ken Cockrel will do a great job when Monica Conyers goes to jail for bribery.
