Currently I think the savings provided by reloading is marginal, and for singles and doubles the ecomomy shells seems to work just fine. But handicap is a different story.

Who makes a decent ecomony handicap shell? What are you paying per flat?

AND please don't highjack this thread and make it about reloading economics. My first sentance is simply a quailfier for my questions.

The problem with most economy shells is soft shot (low percentage of antimony.)

You can get away with soft shot for singles and doubles.

Hard shot is important for handicap shells. Better patterns at distance.

Hey Nutso, for Handicap I like Remington Gun Clubs, 2 3/4 dram, 1 1/8 of
shot. My next choice would be Estates with the same loading. A number of
friends use Federal Top Guns and they seem to do fine.
Price right now in northern CA is $56.00 to $58.00 out the door. Have seen the
Top Guns in Stockton for $54.00 but then tax on top of that.

Nutso, I feel the economy shells function very well for singles and doubles, but I shoot new Winchester AA for caps. Not saying the economy shells aren't good enough to shoot caps. I just feel more comfortable with the AA. Have a great day. Hoosier

The green paper Rio was a good shell. Are they still made? I don't care for the plastic HCP Rio. I think it's hard to beat the Nitros unless you use paper Feds.

Buy top of the line Rem, Fed or Winchester, get the rebate, sell the empties. Thats the best shell-the cheapest.

I have heard but don't know for sure that both Top Gun and Estate shells are loaded with a harder shot than Remington Gun Clubs. As for RIOs How do you know what size shot you are getting. I normally reload and very seldom shoot any factory ammo but I bought several flats of the HCP 7 1/2s from a buddy who is getting out of trap shooting and they are marked for shot size 7 1/2 / 2.3mm which comes out to .0905 or US # 8 shot. We have a handicap marathon coming up in 2 weeks at Piedmont so I guess I'll give them a go just to see how they do.

I personally broke a 100 from the 26 at the Missouri state shoot last summer with Estate 3 dram 7 1/2s, and have seen at least 2 100s broke from the 27 with Estates (Ron Watson from Ks) I have also broke 98s and 97s from the 27 with Estates and with Rios blue hull 3 dram 7 1/2.

So you cant prove by me that High price shells do any better...

I've seen that 1100. John is not lying, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I'd bet Dennis thinks its beautiful!

Wish I could shoot like Dennis does.

I also heard that the Top Gun Fererals have a harder shot in them. I believe it even says it on the box too about having harder shot

We like using the 3 dram 7.5 1 1/8 oz recipe for handicap.

when Dick's has them on sale buy one box get one 50% off it comes to 45.00 a flat can't beat that
