Looking at some of the pics of the earthquake in Chile. One arched bridge was missing all the spans between the supports. Funny thing, there was no sign of any steel in the concrete! Things in some countries are not what we are used to in the USA.

Now, Obama will open the flood gates and welcome all of the Chileians (?) to relocate to America, free of charge ... That way he can have people staying in all of the foreclosed property helping themself to what ever is left of them ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

This last quake was the second largest in near recorded history. It was an 8.8 and in 1960 there was a 9.0. Neither of these quakes produced the great loss of life like the haitian quake a month ago.

What's with the attitude when it comes to natural disastors and American aid to those who are in need of help?? You guys are saying you don't want to help those who are hurting. I'm glad I'm not your neighbor. I feel sorry for those who are.

As I recall, there never was any help from other countries when we were in need after a few disasters. There is no reason for us to offer anything but medical help. We are too free with money we don`t have to be building back others economy . And why in the world did Chile build overhead road systems when they knew damn well they are on a fault line. Same thing goes in our own country !!! I feel very sorry for those countries but sh*t happens.

Obammy don't want those people up here, they are into free enterprize, not commie/socialism, Marxist "equality of result" lie, crapola. They got rid of their dictator, hope we do as well.

Ljutic I think they needed the roads and had no where else to put them. In America we have supposedly the largest fault in the world and it goes up the Mississippi river. We know it's there and yet we build bridges across the river and use them every day. I hope I'm not on one of those bridges when the Big One hit's, actually I hope the big one never comes but one day it will and the longer it waits the worse in statistics it will be. It's all about the build up of pressure and those plates moving against each other. If a lot of you guys don't know about it since 9-11 our engineers across America have strengthed the way our steel buildings have been designed. The additional strength has been aimed at the destruction value of aircraft being flown into the buildings but the way they have strengthened them is also helping to guard against the forces of earthquakes. I don't think a two hundred year old brick building in St Louis is going to be helped by our new technology but the new ones just might save your life. Lets hope so anyway. Dan

My point was the roadways built on pillars over land ,not over gourges as what was shown in the photos . These same overhead roads in California came tumbling down when the earth shifts . We have come a long way with standard highways and circles .

Yes they are mostly Catholic. I have heard today the death toll is over 700 now and growing. With so much power in the movement of the plates down there it's a miracle most of the buildings weren't flattened. I'm sure the death toll will be in the thousands before this mess is cleaned up. It also knocked the earth 7"'s off it's axis. The quake also shortened the day by 1.26 microseconds
