    Earthquakes are, from a geologic time line, common on the west coast. California gets most of the attention, but we get a few in Oregon and Washington.

    The real problem is that California is constantly having quakes, while Oregon and Washington have them infrequently, and generally they are much smaller.

    This means that when we do get a major plate realignment in the northwest, it may be a real doozy. There are a lot of fault lines in the Portland and Seattle areas. In fact, the Portland area has 95 identified volcanoes that are a result of magma escaping through faults and fractures. The map below shows only 74 of them.
