The house of representative has just voted to approve "The Dream Act" and send it to the Senate. The function of this law would be to allow, after meeting the requirements of the act, children of illegal immigrants who are also illegal and who were brought to the US as minors, to become legal residents and eventually citizens.

    The requirements are:
Must have entered the United States before the age of 16 (i.e. 15 and younger)
Must have been present in the United States for at least five (5) consecutive years prior to enactment of the bill
Must have graduated from a United States high school, or have obtained a GED, or have been accepted into an institution of higher education (i.e. college/university)
Must be between the ages of 12 and 28 at the time of application
Must have good moral character, no criminal record

If the applicant meets these requirements, they must within the next 6 years either complete at least 2 years of college or 2 years of military service.

Since these individuals were brought to the US without their consent, I am uncomfortable punishing them with deportation, for the crimes of their parents. What do you guys think?

Whatever happened to the proposal to secure the border first and then enact comprehensive immigration reform to include work permits?

Once we have effective border control, legislation such as the so called "Dream
    Act" can be considered.

IMO, the United States benefits from adding well qualified immigrants but the path to immigration must follow a well defined process and use reasonable quotas. We cannot absorb huge inflows of people from failed countries just because we have a better standard of living.

All of us, unless we are Native Americans, have an immigrant heritage.

    Secure the border first.

I don't like it myself. I listened to a broadcast concerning the college thing and guess who's going to pay for that. We are with student loans. I'm sick of the special teachers and interpreter's that cost plenty in our school system. I think they should all be sent back and allowed to return through proper channels. You're right that it isn't exactly fair to the children but I'm not responsible for their parents illegal entry into our country. Why should I, my kids, and neighbors suffer for illegals. If you are here illegal regardless of age, you shouldn have no claim to US rights or benefits. You should be deported and come into the country through proper channels, this way the Democratic party can keep track of your "citizenship" and make sure that you are a legitimate canidate for US president. Lacking all else you either stand the border to protect real US citizens or you side with those who allow open borders, allowing terrorists and other undesirables in the form of those who impersonate US citizens. Why in our present economy doesn't the government do something about all the illegal labor that sneaks in and why don't we punish those who put them to work, and why do we have people who feel sorry for those that illegally bring their children in to weigh down an already overburden welfare system? If you really feel bad about it go over to Ms. "Molly Feel Goods" page and ponder or pout over there. Our country is in a crisis because of gross negligence and mismanagement because of the twisted views of those that see fit to weaken and destroy the very fabric that this country was built upon. The real reason a true democracy doesn't last much over 200 years is the people lose track of the guidelines set forth by the founding fathers, and set out to change or eliminate the values everyone so wants to live under. Our US Constitution should never come under attack by any US citizen.

The devil, as always, in any Liberal program, is in the details. This plan also allows the patriated "citizen" to partition for citizenship for their entire extended families, including immigration of those still living in other countries. It also includes health care and Social Security benefits for all.

It's the proverbial 'Nose of the Camel Under the Tent', as it always is. As Earl Q. Pits used to say - "Wake Up America!".

This Act will take hand complete authority to bureaucrats. If, and I use the word in it's strictest meaning, if it's fair and important then let the country vote on a constitutional amendment of comprehensive citizenship. If it's not, then it's just political proms inflicting undue position on the unsuspecting.

    IMO,
    Kip

In the big picture it really doesn't matter anymore does it. America is a broke dying country. We are morally bankrupt and fiscally bankrupt. We have allowed millions of illegals into this country and have spent a fortune in social services on them. Might as well give them citizenship and free college too. It is going to be funny watching the baby boomer generation try to make it in their old age on the backs of poor immigrant workers brought in for rich owners of companies to exploit at the expense of the lower wage American workers. Like Europe, we live in a socialist country that relies on the next generation to pay for the previous generation in old age. Trouble is, with feminism, abortion and modern liberalism, the baby boomers didn't have a next generation. America is going to die with or without millions of poor uneducated Mexicans. There is also going to be a wave of elderly abuse like this country has never seen with millions of old baby boomers totally dependent on government with no family to check on them. All this brought to you by the most selfish generation ever born and our rotten socialist government.

If we are going under economically in this country. I will not be one who stands aside and let it happen. The people have the right of empeachment of our public servants. If we are going to loose out way of life then we can loose it without the bastards in DC. They should be incarcirated for life and be put behind glass walls for all tol see for rest of their natural life.

Thanks for the thoughtful replies. The range of ideas is probably a good reflection of those of US citizens.

as unfortunate as they make it seem, we have far more important things to do with the limited funds available. Rather than giving it to someone not from this county, be it their fault or not, those same funds should go to the education of kids rightfully here FIRST. No question about that....sorry, no dream act, no way. I have struggled to help get my son through college. Instead of giving money to non-citizens, give it to our next generation of citizens please.

For tax paying Americans this should be titled the (NIGHTMARE ACT) instead of a dream! It's a dream alright, a dream of future votes that will cost us all dearly!

I like Mexican food and I like Mexicans. I just don't want ALL of them here.

Problem with this legislation is that it is just a stepping stone to complete Amnesty for all.

We have to draw the line somewhere and I feel like just below San Diego is a good place to start.

Secure the Border then we'll talk.
