I shoot light 9's on the first shot and heavy 7 1/2's on the second. I am by no means a great doubles shooter, but I'd like to hear what good shooters are using. What loads and chokes work the best? Duane

I use a modified choke (0.022" constriction) on the first shot and a Lfull (0.035" const.) for the second. Same shells in each bbl - 1 1/8 Oz #8 @ 1145 FpS. Same load with 7 1/2 works fine also.

What you want to look for is how the targets break with centered hits. You should see lots of smoke and few chunks. You will get a lot of arguments about how the smoked targets don't score any better than the chipped birds but what the hard hits do accomplish is to train your mind as to exactly where the gun needs to be pointed when the shot is fired. This is precision shooting not spray and pray. With improved accuracy comes speed and then you will see your game improve. Stay fluid with the gun motion (don't stop the gun or aim it) and see those targets.

So thats me - but I don't know any top rate doubles shooters that shoot open chokes and none of them use heavy loads either.

1 1/8 oz, #8 shot for both shots. It's too confusing to load different shells for the first and 2nd shot, so I usually stay with a regular load. If windy or an important shoot, I may use a 3 dram load for the 2nd shot, but still #8 shot. My P gun chokes are factory fixed chokes .027 and .040. AJ

I use 7/8oz. #9 for the first shot with a Cylinder choke and 1 1/8oz. #7 1/2 for the second shot with an IM choke.

My Perazzi MX8 was done by Seitz years ago as a doubles gun. I bought it from the original owner. It's back-bored, ported and choked .012" and .026" with 32" barrels. I have been using 9's on the first shot because of the open choke. I shoot doubles poorly, and slow, so I have been using 7 1/2's for the second shot. It's a pain shooting 2 different loads for doubles and I have loaded it with the shells reversed several times. I need to do something different.

Wolfram, "none of them use heavy loads." HMMMMMMM Happen to know a few pretty good doubles shooters that stated in a Trap and Field article about a year ago that they shoot 3dram loads on their second shot of doubles.

Used .25/.30 for a good while now I use .15/30 have always used a 1oz of 8s first shot 1-1/8 8s LT load second shot. Thinking of going back to the .25/.30 scores were better. Have always been told I use way too tight of a choke. Maybe I do maybe I don't? I use what works. Jake ATA #0312457

P gun, Tom Wilkinson fixed choked. under barrel .018 1 oz # 9 1225 fps. over barrel .028 1 1/8 oz # 8 1200. That second bird is a mid handicap bird, 3 dram load is an advantage. Wolfram is right on the money, smoke smoke. Smoking the second bird hard is the key to learning doubles. When you start you miss a higher percent of second birds, as you progress that % changes. 1st bird fast, second bird deliberate. MHO YMMV Scott
