Second shooting gold for Czech Republic

David Kostelecky of the Czech Republic hit a perfect 25 targets in the final of men’s trap shooting to win gold at the Beijing Summer Games on Day 2 of Olympic competition.

Kostelecky, 33, won the country’s second gold medal in shooting in as many days, the first coming from Katerina Emmons in 10-metre air rifle.

Silver in men’s trap went to Italy’s Giovanni Pellielo, who hit 23 targets in the final and 120 in the qualification round.

The bronze medal was a tight contest and featured a shoot-off between 2004 Olympic gold medallist Alexey Alipov of Russia and Australia’s Michael Diamond, who won Olympic gold in 1996 and 2000 and was ranked No. 1 in the world heading into the Games.

The Russian edged Diamond in the shoot-off, hitting three out of three targets, while Diamond hit two of three.

Canada’s Giuseppe Di Salvatore, who at age 18 is one of the youngest shooters to line up in Beijing, did not qualify for the final. He finished 26th overall.

The Vancouver native will also compete in men’s double trap.
