I found and purchased a 1950 Winchester Model 12 12ga Skeet gun with the two-pin rib and a Cutts Compensator. I have Dave Riffle's book and I can't find what the factory stamped on the barrel for choke. My gun says WS1. Dave's book just says the Cutts was an option for $124.35 Retail for their Model 12 Skeet Gun. Is the WS1 the correct markings?

Winchester Skeet 1 = WS1. The Cutts for your particular gun is non-original. Factory Cutts produced guns did not have a choke designator. That does not mean that Winchester did not install it, just that when the barrel was originally made it was choked WS1.

Other's interpretaion of the facts may and will vary; however, it generally would be considered an altered and non-origianl gun.

lwr is correct. The FACTORY CUTTS guns did not have a choke marking and the barrel had a forged lug that the Cutts Compensator attached to. The WS1 gun you have is a factory Vent Rib Skeet gun if the proof marks are to the left of the rib. If the proof marks are covered by the rib then the rib was installed as an after thought too. Winchester also made CYL and WS2 barreled guns.

Have fun with the gun. We, the Minneapolis Gun Club is going to have a Vintage Gun Shoot in August and there is going to be a Cutts Class. Has to have an original Lyman Cutts Compensator to be "legal".

Ithaca$$$Grade, actually, only the plain barrel Winchester factory installed Cutts guns have the integral flange on the end of the barrel. The ventilated rib guns of any type, two pin, round post, or donut post, did not have an integral flange on the end of the barrel to mount the Cutts. Neither did the solid rib guns that were factory equipped with a Cutts. The feature in common for guns that had factory installed Cutts Compensators was the absense of a choke marking. Fakers are starting to remove the choke markings from Cutts equipped Model 42s. At some time in the future, expect the same from high dollar Model 12s.
