    The pop-up screen was malware.

Run, don't walk to down load microsoft security essentials - it is free from MS.

It will HOPEFULLY remove the malware with no damage to your OS (Vista I presume from your comments).

It's malware what HSLDS said. They show up as links in the comment boxes of web-sites, like Huff-Post. Never try to open them. If a malware remover doesn't remove it (most of them don't) do a system restore to an earlier date when your computer was running good.

Aggressive sales technique. Check your pop up blocker. If it appears again learn how to delete it. HMB

Most likely said something like win vista antivirus. It is a virus that infects a computer for 30 days then goes in active. I use 2 programs to remove, 1 was suggested download Microsoft Security Essentials, its free and it works. The other I use and suggest is MalewareBytes, they also have a free version that works great for the adware and maleware that security essentials will miss.

Anytime something pops up that is not a program that you know you didn't put on your computer don't click on it even to shut it down, it's malware disguising itself as a anti-virus program and if you click anywhere on it you are enabling it. Just shut the computer down and when you restart it make sure your anti-virus and anti-malware programs run to get rid of it. This particular program gets a lot of people because it looks like a real anti-virus program.

In fact even if I get an email from a company or program I do have I don't click on the link in the email, I close the email and go straight to the web site from my browser just to be sure.
