Just picked up a nice 870 competition. Took it apart and cleaned it but would like to know any tips special concerns etc. I noticed to get to the gas ports you have to take out a small wire clip, seems like it could break or go flying across the basement which if it happens in my basement it's gone. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike.

You don't need to take out the little spring. Just depress the point that sticks out with a small screwdriver and slide the piston out of the barrel ring. To replace it, cock the piston at an angle and you can depress the spring with the assembly itself and slide it back in. If you take the little spring out repeatedly, it will eventually break.

The piston and sliding seals should also be kept clean and dry, just wipe after cleaning with an oily rag. Periodically clean the inside of the magazine tube and the piston return spring. There's really not much to go wrong with these guns.
