Looking for suggestions for a clean burning powder for 20ga 1oz loads. I currently use Blue Dot, a good 20ga powder but, it is not a clean burning powder. Any suggestions?

    Thanking you in advance.

Longshot is the cleanest burning subgage powder I've ever used, but about anything is cleaner than BlueDot, especially for hunting loads in the cold.

There is not much 1oz data for 20/28, but I'll bet if you called Alliant, they have some tested but not-published.

Hodgdon lists Longshot, 800x, HS-6, and HS-7 for 20 gauge 1 ounce loads.

I've used Longshot for a 12 gauge hunting loads before and it works well but leaves "stuff" in the barrel.

I guess it depends on your definition of "clean."

International clays is about as clean as it gets.

Anybody have an opinion on 20/28? I am trying to keep the pressure down on my 20 ga tubes (vs my current International load) and see that 20/28 has some potential. Thoughts?

Everyone I have ever known, including myself, who liked to shoot heavy loads in 20 ga. tubes has cracked their tube chambers. Odds are it will happen eventually. Ron

Herco has the lowest pressure I could find. 1155 fps 10,000 psi. I was told by Briley to keep the pressures around 10,000 psi and I didn't have to worry about cracking tubes

not sure if there is a formula for American Select on 20 guage but it is very clean burnig powder.Check the charts .I use American Select when loading all my trap load , very clean but it cost about 15.00 more for an 8 lb. keg

I use Hodgdon's Clays Universal in my .38 Special, .357 Magnum, 44 Magnum and 45ACP handgun loads. I just finished loading 100 44 Magnum target loads and recall that the jug's label lists 20-gauge loads as well. It's very clean burning, especially when compared to Bullseye and Unique. Check on Hodgdon's website for full data.

For rhett1977: I am surprised at the change of attitude if Briley told you that. They didn't even like some factory skeet loads last I knew. I live in San Antonio where we get to talk to them on a regular basis. The one ounce 12 ga. is much more efficient and shoulder friendly. IMHO Ron

    Dan, 20/28 is good stuff ... it's almost ... *ALMOST* Alliant's PB.

Alliant nearly named it e4, and it makes a pretty good 12ga load at ±18gn, but they decided they competed with themselves in RD/GD/Unique pretty well already with AS & e3 - no sense adding ANOTHER self-competitor.

I've used in 20 & 24ga. Very clean, good ignition, cold-tolerant ... doesn't smell as good as the dots.

20ga pressures and tubes are always an issue. That is the primary reason you don't see Green Dot loads for 20ga any more.

Alliant still lists Green Dot with 3/4 oz loads. They make a great skeet load.

    Gun1357,
I was just answering the OP's question. I see no need for 1 oz 20 gauge. I think 7/8 oz is plenty. Especially considering they use a little less than that for International targets. JMHO

I have shot 20 ga 1 oz loads at 16 yards trap for the last three years and have a 97 average on at least 1000 targets a year. The load is about the equavalent of a 2 3/4 dr 12 ga as far as felt recoil. Here is the load. 18 grains of 800 x .....velocity 1160 fps....9000 psi......its the best I could find....Hope it works for you.....

PB powder is one of the most cleanest powders for loading (3) gauges of shotshells.
12 ga. 20gr of PB extra light load.
20ga. 16gr of PB for 7/8 or 1 oz loads
28ga. 14.4gr of PB for 3/4 oz loads

It also is one of the most expensive powders that can be used.
