I was in Las Vegas for the SHOT Show, and decided to swing by the CCSC. After all, Clark County put millions of dollars into a rifle, pistol and shotgun range, so it would be rude of me not to visit at least once.

The CCSC has been open for a while for rifle, pistol, trap and skeet, but just opened two sporting clays ranges on Friday. Marty (the party) Fischer designed both of them, so I knew they'd be fun.

CCSC is located about 25 miles north of the world famous Las Vegas Strip. Take the 15 North to the 215 West (the exit before the Speedway), get off at Decatur and head north until you run into it. In fact you can see the city in the background in some of the pictures.

They've got two 15 station courses setup in a figure eight. All the stations have three shooting positions, gun racks, and are fully covered (this will come in handy in the summer).

Yesterday was day-one, and I gotta tell you, they're 90% there.

Are there going to be some growing pains, sure. But they are already so far ahead of some county parks that have been in business for years, it's laughable (go down to Ft Lauderdale FL, head west, and you'll see what I'm talking about)

The targets weren't too bad, and I was crushing them and feeling pretty good (until I realized I was shooting on the East Course, and the West Course is the tougher one).

If you're in Vegas, give them a try. I think they've got the Silver Buckle scheduled for March, so it should be fun.

I notice they still have the "muzzles up" sign behind the desk. How is that working out for O/U shooters, etc? Ron

What were the prices to shoot? Did you rent the cart?

trap is 6 dollars, carts available for three hours or all day. they have about 10 rental o/u guns, glasses, hearing protection, shell pouches. everything you need and ammo. I think the ammo was 6 bucks a box. carts and stuff i do not remember but right in line with everything else. You could show up and have everything you need to shoot available right there. Wow what a place. Easy to get to, eating facilities, camping facilities--about 75 spaces with 30 and 50 amp service. motordoc

Nice picture of Steve Carmichael, hell of a good shooter and excellent range manager. He knows how to put on a program

Seriously, I am still wondering how I walk around with the action open and the muzzle up on my O/U. I have been there several times but I don't want to be embarrassed by getting thrown out for breaking a safety rule. Ron

Ron, carry your O/U like you do at any other range and there is no problem. I know what the sign says and look forward to having you enjoy the shooting park.

YSR is talking about the Markham Park range in Sunrise Florida which has a limited amount of space for the target range. The entire park is 660 acres and 90% of it is for other public activities. Considering the space available, the County has done a pretty good job of getting all of the shooting facilitys into the alloted space.

Even I have to say, "Isn't She lovely?" about the shooting park in Las Vegas. I bet with that clear, beautiful sky and air, even I could hit a few clays...

    YSR,

A very cleverly worded response. No harm, no foul.
