What is the comventional wisdom as to the optimal choke constriction when shooting Annie Oakleys with a gun with a .725 bore? Is .040 too tight?

I've had guns with everything from .028-.040 that would crush targets from way back. I tend to like .030-.035 for my 27yard+ shooting.

Don't forget part of the equation is the shell you're shooting. My dad shot a 1970 BT-99 32" full choke. He won many 10 bird shoot-offs from the parking lot shooting 7 1/2 AA Internationals. That shell in that gun would break targets way out there.
