I read today that Mark Twain's classic "Huck Finn" is being edited. Anytime the N word is mentioned the word "slave" is being replaced. What's next? I beleive we are heading down a VERY slippery slope folks. JMO, Regards, Randy Price

It should be left alone, no matter how offensive it may be to some, as a symbol of the times and a stark reminder to show how far we have progressed as a society. Literature is a form of art and should never be altered or censored. IMHO Neil

If you don't like it, don't read it. It was written in the speak of the times and just a part of the culture. Get over it!!!.......merlyn

They also changed the words "injun joe" to indian joe, and "half breed" to half blood.

Why should you change it? The book shows the language from the time and the way that white folk at the time thought about other races. It is history as it is written.

The irony is that these politically correct twits have made the book worthless for its intended purpose. By turning Nigger Jim into plain ordinary Jim, the plight of slaves and the irony of a grown man being ordered around like a child by a child are lost. Nigger Jim is sub-humanized by his very name.

I guess I'll have to go find a pre-ban copy of the book.

Brian is right. Apparently the politically correct idiots either have not read the book or do not have the intelligence to understand its powerful message against slavery.

So the spoken Word or the Written word is no longer a Freedom??? I like to see it taken to our noble Supreme Court and see how they would wade in on this case if it were to accrue. "a new country is being formed." OH MY what our we going to do.

Sort of related, but have you looked at the content of your kids/grand kids history books lately. Amazing what isn't being told about the horrors of socialism, Communism, Marxism, and any other "ism" you might want have our next generation informed about.

If "nigger" is so offensive to so many, how come ever black comedian uses it constantly to roars of laughter from the predominently black audiance?? The word is used in rap & hip hop lyrics and has been edited to "nigga". I quess poor ole whitey is the real problem.

All the stupid bastards that don't want to offend anyone, or, more likely that want to impose their version of "correctness" on the rest of us will soon be occupied with more important matters. Like survival.

Too bad they can't be marked qith a scarlet "A" (a$$hole) on their forehead so we don't have to wast time sorting them out.

I grew up living just 15 miles from Mark Twain's (Samuel Clemens) birthplace. Leo grew up in Hannibal (Twain's boyhood home). When Samuel Clemens was just about 2 yrs old, his father went broke operating a general store in Florida, Missouri. The family moved to Hannibal. Today, Leo and I live just a few miles south of Hannibal. I think this is just a flash in the media that will soon disappear. Our local junior high school spends weeks studying his writing, followed by a field trip into Hannibal. Hannibal has a great "Twain" museum and the historic district downtown is worth an afternoon to explore. Each July there is a NATIONAL Tom Sawyer Festival over the week of July 4th that draws in tens of thousands of visitors. Twain's books are somewhat difficult to read, due to the "slang". I get along better if I just read them outloud, since my speech tends to lean more toward "Missourian" than proper English. Given time, this too shall pass....

Huck and Tom Sawyer are both being changed yet the person on the news showed the cover of a new "RAP" album on the cover in 5" letters the word nigger was printed. Why is this allowed and a classic novel, who in my opinion, no one has the right to edit anyones books. If you dont like it dont read it.
Dont give me that BS about it being a black thing.

My guess is, it's the publisher who's doing the PC deed...so they can sell more books...(to schools, etc.).

School administrators don't want to get involved in "issues," you know.
