Cardinal Center (OH) Named USA Shooting Regional Training Center

June 30, 08. USA Shooting has named Cardinal Center Campgrounds, Marengo, Ohio, a Regional Training Center (RTC) for the Olympic Shotgun Sports. Cardinal Center is only the third facility in the country to receive this designation. The duties of an RTC include holding sanctioned matches, coach schools and shooting camps in order to assist USA Shooting in exposing athletes to the Olympic sport of shooting.

Cardinal Center’s Olympic aspirations began when approached by Buckeye International Junior Shooting Sports, Inc., a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit organization formed to foster amateur junior athletes in the international shooting sports. Buckeye had the vision of an international style venue in central Ohio to train young shooters. The founders of Buckeye had previously demonstrated their success in training young athletes via Centerburg Youth Shooting Sports (CYSS). CYSS has, to date, three Junior Olympic Team members and one National Development Team member. The Fishburn family saw the potential of such a facility and agreed to provide the venue and build the bunker. Buckeye is providing the machines and electronics to operate them. Cardinal and Buckeye will cooperate in coordinating events.

Buckeye would like to thank USA Shooting, Les Greevy, and the folks at Fairfield Sportsman’s Association for all of the support in the international shooting arena. We hope to pay back some of the favors given to us over the years. A big “ Thanks!” to Cardinal Center and the Fishburns for their support as well.

Current plans (Phase One) dictate bunker completion this summer with public access in addition to youth training as outlined by the RTC designation. Buckeye International plans on training International trap, double trap, and skeet. Future phases will enable the Cardinal RTC to better meet the needs developing young shooters.

For more information on the Cardinal RTC, Buckeye International or to make a tax-deductible donation, please contact Tim Young (ohiotim@gmail.com) or Jim Eyster (jimeyster@ecr.net).

Thats great news ... we need more clubs like that around the country. I congratulate them for all they do for all of our shooting sports.

Possibly someday the ATA will come home to Ohio and this premier facility will also let them call there great place home ... well ... people can have dreams ya know.

This is great for the shooting sports industry. Just go to show you , if you build it , they will come. What better place could they choose than the Cardinal Center. Mr. Fishburn has done a wonderfull job putting a premier shooting facility together. If you haven't been there , you are missing a fantastic place.

    Outstanding news.

Now all we need is a program like SCTP to get kids involved in shooting the international games. I know SCTP has an international arm, same as Trap, Skeet & SC but it doesn't seem to have much traction apart from the annual JO events. Maybe this will help get things started.

I look forward to visiting the Cardinal Center down the road. Now if we could only get a complex like that built out here in the West we would have a much better national footprint. Colorado Springs, Cardinal Center, Kerrville and a dot on the map out on the west coast somewhere. More matches, shorter travel, more shooters. It could happen.

As you said, the SCTP program for International is there. There is some pretty good participation now, but I'm afraid many coaches think it's over their head...it's not! We've had reasonable success with an ATA field, wobble trap, and a picnic table. The reason for the bunker is to accommodate more athletes and get them to the next level. In addition, we need more bunkers in the US.

Nay sayers told Mr Fishburn that Bunker is dying and that it doesn't make sense to build a bunker. Fortunately, he did not listen. Other have asked us (Buckeye) "Where are the shooters coming from the shoot that thing?". My response is "We're going to grow the shooters." I think Mr Fishburn knows that that he's not going to get rich off the bunker. In fact he has stated that he did it for the kids. We're glad that it's finally coming together!

Jim - you hit the nail on the head - the coaches think it's over their head. Let the kids shoot it and let them decide. My experience is that the kids LOVE it, the targets are more demanding, the game requires more discipline and a stronger mental approach but the kids can break them. The trick is getting them started early enough and have a good coach/instructor to bring them along SLOOOOWWWWLY with sound fundamentals. It is not american trap where they can shoot a 300 target program in a day - this is 3-5 rounds MAX.

We are very fortunate at Coon Creek to have a wonderful coach and another gentleman that comes out to visit once a month who has a national level background. These are infinitely patient men that provide a positive environment for the kids to learn - it is great to see. We are equally blessed that our club owner - George Ahart loves the kids and does what he can to provide them with a first class bunker facility. the kids have now taken complete responsibility for turning on the traps, loading targets, cleaning the bunker, and at the end of the day they unload the arm and decock the springs leaving the machines relaxed. They are welcome to come out to the range and shoot any day they want regardless of opening hours - now that is an expression of faith and trust. It is very preliminary but we're talking about having a SCTP International Trap League in 2009. It will be small but it is a start.
