There must be a common denominator here.

Marion Barry, Kwame, Nagin, et al.

I guess it's just big city administration that's the problem.

Kwame was young, a street guy, a hip hop guy...his long suit was his mother a Congressional Represenative...he was what we call in Detroit "Ghettofabulous"

His arrogance is over the top...

The Wayne County Prosecutor hasn't brought perjury charges yet so he may not go down...... as some suspect.....

    regards

I Listened to Kwame being interviewed on WJR this morning. Talk about an out-of-control ego. He constantly referred to himself in the third person, a sure sign of an over-the-top ego.

This is a man who graduated from college and law school, yet is totally oblivious to what he did. He lied in court, cheated on his wife, embarassed his children, shamed his office, conspired to cover it all up; and he has no personal embarrassment? He said his only embarrassment was for the City of Detroit having to endure this scandal.

He also alluded ot potential legal action against the Detroit Free Press. WJR later interviewed the newspaper's attorney, who more-or-less advised the mayor to be careful what he wished for. He would love to depose the mayor.

What's most embarrassing is for the entire metro area to have to endure this clown.

    Dennis

I'll stay with my original prediction: "he not only survives but is re-elected in a landslide"

Mike, as in when Marion Barry got out of jail.

Must be a lot more buses leaving town than coming in.

While not a native to this area (moved from Ohio in 1985) I have been observing Detroit politics since the 1960's. No surprises and no other expectations.

    Mr. Michalski:

There may be reason for a different expectation on the horizon. It may or may not be a surprise.

Prodded by Jerbear's original post, I did a little news snooping. Seems southwest Detroit has a large and ever growing Hispanic population. The economic base of the neighborhoods mentioned have made a major turnaround and have become so prosperous that hizzoner the mayor didn't even include them in his plans for city redevelopment/revitalization.

If, perhaps when, members of Kwamie's ethinicity are no longer the voting majority, you can expect a change.

Sissy, I would really like to believe you are correct but I think I'm more likely to win the Grand American Handicap this year.

    Mike and Sissy -

Like Mike, I moved to the area in 1982, well into Coleman Young's reign. Coming from a smaller state, it was an eye opener to see such blatant hack politics. I had studied and read about it, but had not seen it first hand.

The problem Detroit has with its government is the way the city council is elected. The city charter calls for at-large elections, and not by district, ward, etc. Therefore, the only folks that tend to get elected are those with some type of name recognition. There are very few Hispanics with sufficient name recognition to get elected from city-wide electors. The local media, for the most part, abet this since no one wants to recognize the elephant in the room.

Monica Conyers (Rep John Conyers' wife), Sheila Cockrel (Ken Cockrel's step-monther), are just two who have resonance based on last name recognition.

Kwame Kilpatrick was elected almost entirely on his name recognition to Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, and his father, who are both long-time hacks of the Detroit Democrat machine.

Until the charter is changed it will be difficult for any "outsider" to enter the inner circle of Detroit politics.

    Best,
    Dennis

One council member is now calling for his departure. Didn't catch his last name, but his first name is Kwamie as well. When WJR interviewed him this morning, he stated that he was not hiding anything, nor were the city attorneys. It was just a "settlement agreement" to keep the tapes quiet.
This guy is full of himself or what? What a shame.

I am ashamed that our great State of sportsmen is tainted with the gangsta clowns that run Detroit.

I think Hizzoner Kwame's arrogance stems from an attitude of "It's my turn and if you don't like it Fugg off" he, in essence, is a little Al Capone, Mayor Daly, Huey Long,, etc, etc......Whitey gets away with it all the time so why not me.....

Kwame has his posse and you best not be crossin him up....a lot of very big people are being very quiet in Detroit for exactly that reason....

Very sad when a person like this can get away with what he has....

    "Ghettofabulous"

Setterman, the other "Kwame" is Kwame Kenyatta. He's a local socialist activist who has kept the pot stirred with his redistribution rants. He's another one who got elected simply because the local rags think he's such a great "community activist". Shows up daily in his African dashikis and matching hats. He authored the resolution for Kilpatrick's resignation.

Watching the Detroit City Council is like watching the crew arguing about deck chair arrangement on the RMS Titanic.
