    My boss is selling his in new condition BT-99. Serial number is 013XX. I believe this is one of the older models. Any idea what a good price offer should be? Thanks in advance.

    What is the rest of the serial number? Then we will tell you when it was made.

    Some BT-99s shoot high, some are even higher. The guys on this forum can tell you, by using the serial number, what the gun your looking to buy might just do (POI--ht. wise).

    Give these guys a chance and they can really be a great help in learning about different guns.

    Date Historic Information Serial Number Info
    1968-75 1969 started using two digits for the date of manufacture and the following code:
    D=BT-99
    The serial number began with 1000 for each year.
    Example: 0001D69 = A 1969 BT-99 shotgun with a serial number of 0001. D=BT-99
    1976-1995 In 1976 Browning re-standardized its serial number identification. The BT-99 was discontinued in 1995.
    1. Serial Number
    beginning with 01001
    at the start of each year.
    2. Date of Manufacture
    is a two digit code Z=1
    Y=2
    X=3
    W=4
    V=5
    T=6
    R=7
    P=8
    N=9
    M=0
    3. BT-99 Type 149=BT-99 Type
    Serial
    Number Example:
    01001RT149

    This would be an BT-99 shotgun, manufactured in 1976 with the serial number 01001.

    Indy,

    You have a 1971 BT. Numbers preceeding a D indicate the year of manufacture in the years '68 - '75. From 1976 on the alphabet dating system is used.

    Your '71 should shoot pretty flat, about 60/40. The high shooters from the factory of this era were 1970, '77, '78, & '79, with the 1977 model being the highest of all.

    Does a serial number with only two numbers such as xx D 8 mean it is a first year gun in 1968 ??

    I have never seen a 1968 gun. If I have, I didn't know what I was looking at. I have read the '68 & '69 model years were released in Europe and 1970 was the first year they were available in the U.S.

    The '69 has St. Louis Missouri stamped on the left side of the barrel, while the 1970 has Morgan Utah.

    I would think a 1968 serial # would start 68D, but I have never seen one like that.

    All the '69 guns I have seen have a red / orange color to the wood.

    If it is an unaltered fixed-choke 32" 750-800 is a reasonable 'friendly' price. 32" are a hard-sell these days of 34 & 35" bbls.

    34", a little more.

    Browning choke tubes, a little less.

    The vinyl Browning 'luggage' case is a throw-in.
