....to make up for idiotic destruction of surplus military items that could make a lot more money from being sold to citizens than being melted down as scrap metal.

This auction is for 10,500 lbs of stripper clips. Three-quarters of this pile is steel, the rest is brass. That's 7875 lbs of steel, which is just under four tons. Light scrap steel is running roughly $390 a ton, or 19.5 cents per pound, total $1535.625 . The 2625 lbs of brass at 2.55 lb comes to $6693.75. grand total $8229.37

There are about 32 stripper clips per pound. That means 10,500 x 32 = 336,000 clips. Retail on these is about $1 each, total retail coming to $336,000. Of course, a surplus salvager is not going to pay that much, because they need a markup. So let's assume they pay even just 5 cents per clip. That's $16,800 for the pile.

Which means the government just flushed $8570.63.

Now that's not going to do much right there to solve the problem with the economy, nor will it offset the amount the liberals want to tax the right. But the point is, this crap goes on all the time. Remember the hoopla over trying to destroy perfectly reloadable cartridge cases?

There needs to be oversight to make sure the government is either not wasting money, or is getting the most potential out of it. Yet all we get told is that there's nothing that can be done except raise taxes. I say BS to that.

Brian, First, I think that 7875 pounds is just under 4 tons. Second, we do have a government watchdog organization that exists to make sure that the government is not wasting money and is getting the most out of its resources. It called the General Services Administration. You may be familiar with them as they have been in the news lately. It's a great example of our tax dollars at work.

Yes, four tons. I corrected my post. Thanks. But the math was done at 19.5 cents per pound x 7875 lbs, so fortunately the math is OK.

And yes, the GSA is SUPPOSED to be watchdog agency. Problem is, they are not acting like one.

Remember also who is behind "scrap metal" recycling!

Greenies and Unions(steel workers) and sad to say "collectors" whose collection would loose their value!

It no different then not allowing the Public owned firearms back into the country in which they were made and paid for by tax dollars!!!!

Over a million pieces that we paid for!! and not to mention the many men and women died with them by their sides or in their hands!! Protecting our Freedoms!

Its time to put an end to PC!!!! because as long as there is pond scum there will be Liberals in our mist!
