What recipe is fairly common for claydot with 10z of shot. What Mec bushing do you use. can't find it on Mec or Alliant powder info. Bill

    Bill,

Depends on a number of factors.

Shell type, wad type, and primer, and speed desired.

Remington STS at 1235fps, with a TGT12 wad, and rem 209 primer is 19.9 grains
AA at 1235fps, WAA12SL and Win 209 primer is 18.5 grains

as you can see, thats two different bushings.

To experiment, start with say a 27 bushing and do a powder drop, weigh it, at least 3 times, then change bushings until you get as close to those as possible.

I know it doesnt directly answer your question, but the question is pretty vague.

    Ted

I'm just trying to find what bushing to start with to work up a load. The mec and Alliant do't have information on bushing for claydot. I thought I would give claydot a try. I just needed somewhere to start and the info you gave me did that. Thanks Bill

When trying to find a starting point for Alliant Clay Dot, look on the powder drop chart for Hodgdon Clays. It's not exact, but it's in the ballpark.

I use Clay Dot and my MEC 9000 drops:

    #29 15.5 grains

    #30 16.4 grains

    #31 17.1 grains

#32 ? don't have one, my guess about 17.9 grains

    #33 18.6 grains

My 1 ounce load is: AA hull, DRA12 wad, Fio 616, 18.6 grains of Clay Dot 1260 fps

Start with the 31 bushing; I think you'll find that's around 17 gr, which is what I use with a DR TGT wad and cheddite primer.

The hard copy version of Alliant's most recent Alliant Reloaders Guide has bushing charts for MEC and other brands. They are on pages 16 and 17. The charts include data for Clay Dot as well as other powders.

You can download a copy of the guide at the website listed above.
