    I found the date to be 1991. Their website says that the last three digits are the model. The last three digits on my shotgun are 199 but I didn't see any different model numbers on their website. Their example was 149=BT99 model.

    The date is two letters in middle of the serial number and if it has a 3rd letter that is the application , ie. 3rd letter J means trap for Citori but the
    Browning web site info is that the BT99 was discontinued in 1995 which we know not to be true. An example of a late BT99 would be -----MZ171

    Neil, I hope this helps.

    Date Historic Information Serial Number Info
    1968-75 1969 started using two digits for the date of manufacture and the following code:
    D=BT-99
    The serial number began with 1000 for each year.
    Example: 0001D69 = A 1969 BT-99 shotgun with a serial number of 0001. D=BT-99

    1976-Present In 1976 Browning re-standardized its serial number identification. The BT-99 was discontinued in 1995.
    1. Serial Number
    beginning with 01001
    at the start of each year.
    2. Date of Manufacture
    is a two digit code Z=1
    Y=2
    X=3
    W=4
    V=5
    T=6
    R=7
    P=8
    N=9
    M=0
    Serial
    Number Example:
    01001RT149

    This would be an BT-99 shotgun, manufactured in 1976 with the serial number 01001.

    3. Determining Tang Style
    The BT-99 has been manufactured with 2 "Tang Styles"

    Long Tang
    Short Tang
    All BT-99 shotguns produced from 1968 through 1995 were equipped with a "Long Tang" trigger guard. All BT-99 shotguns produced from 2001 through the present are equipped with a "Short Tang" trigger guard. Please see figure 1-B for help determining "Long" and "Short" tang.
