A new gun with only 1000 rounds through it shouldn't be popping open when you shoot it. How "HOT" are these loads that cause the gun to pop open?

Did you degrease the gun thoroughly? What are you using for lubricant? Who did the replacement of the top lever spring? Are you sure that the correct replacement spring was installed?

One other thing could be the problem and that is RECOIL. Perhaps the way your buddy holds the gun could cause his thumb to hit the opening lever during recoil. Have someone else try shooting the gun and see if it pops open.

I'm assuming, of course, that you have thoroughly cleaned the locking block and the recess it engages in?

Clean the locking lug with cleaner and don't lube it. I replace top lever spring twice a year. Jerry
