Does anyone have any first hand experience with blood clots, and the pain associated with them ..? I was talking to a friend of mine who was telling me his brother has extreme pain in his upper left leg that radiates to his lower leg, says it so painful he can hardly walk ... I didn't know what to tell him for sure and before I look it up on Web M/D. I figured I would ask and see if anyone on TS.Com has any first hand experience ... Appreciate any and all serious responses ... Thanks ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Having experienced it first hand, my first thought is sciatica. No immediate danger like blood clots, but the pain can be "off the charts" bad, and tends to move around. Could be in the upper leg for a while, then move to the ankle, then back up, wherever really. Makes no sense until you accept that the leg is not the problem, but rather nerves in the back.

I have experience with a blood clot in my right leg....the clot actually extends from mid-thigh to about mid-calf. Don't experience too much in the way of pain but you do feel some "hot spots" and the leg will swell when on it for extended period of time. It will at times give you the feeling of a "Charlie horse" type cramp if you really are on it a lot. Some tingling in the lower extremity due to decreased blood flow....taking 10mg Coumadin daily to thin blood and just learning to live with it.

OhioMike is probably right, I had it about 25 years ago and it is debilitating, to the point of agony, I couldn't stand up for more than a few seconds at times, my left leg would just collapse

If it is scaitica, or some other nerve issue, place an ice pack on the mid back about at the belt line. This will slightly relieve the swelling and reduce the pain for a while. It took time and physical therapy to fix me up. And ice.

The Web M/D. site pretty much leans to sciatica also, says can be from any type of spinal injury to none at all in many cases ... I have spinal compression and it gives me fits when it acts up even Vicodin 10-325 don't help ... Thanks for the information, I will forward it to my Buddy and let him give his brother the good news ... I told him to advise his brother to see a good Spinal Surgeon ... Thanks again ... WPT ... Ganderson is right about the charlie horse feeling. I had them in both legs post surgery, but only had the symptoms in one leg. Since blood clots if not treated can kill you or cause stroke, if you suspect that you might have one get to the DR. and they will do sonograms to determine. Nothing to fool with.

Your friend's brother needs to see his doctor pronto if it is a blood clot. Doppler studies are required to make the diagnosis. THIS CAN BE A MATTER OF LIFE & DEATH! Can't be done @ TS.com

    My experience !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

February, 2011, Spring Grand at Tucson, drove to the Silver Dollar to shoot the Southern Grand.

Was there for three days, playing gin with three friends, got a twinge in my left breast. In 20 top 25 minutes the pain was so bad, had to get to a clinic.

After giving me an aspirin and a glycerin tablet, sent me to the hospital.

About 10 o'clock that evening got into a room. They'd given me morphin without any impact on the pain. After about a half hour they gave me something much stronger that helped with the pain.

Short story long, due to me having clots in both lungs, they kept me for 7 days, all the while administering a super strong blood thinner (lovinox, I think). They yelled at me for moving around too much while in bed! Wouldn't let me get up to pee!

Got off coumadin after seven and a half months!

Asked my Doc what to watch out for in future. He said pain or swelling in my legs.

In December, 2011, I'm watching TV, looked down at my leg resting on the foot rest to see my left leg swollen about a third larger than the other one!

Hot footed it to my doctor, he looks at it, has his nurse put a RED wrist band on me and sends me to the emergency room.

That red wriist bands means I don't have to stand in line anywhere I need to get "stuff" done.

Turns out I had one clot in my left leg and clots in both lungs. They released me the next day because they were fighting something nearly as bad as blood clots at the hospital I was in!

I gave myself the lovinox shots at home!

I've been back on coumadin now for 18 plus months. It is a nuisance for sure, shouldn't eat too much stuff high in vitamin K unless you're prepared to modify your eating habits, and then test, and test, and test again. Sometimes every week, but rarely once a month!

Bill, you'll hear of horror stories about people passing away from them, AND you know what, THEY ARE TRUE!

A friend's son-in-law, injured his knee on an ATV, went to the hospital, planned surgury next moring, and when they were preparing him next morning, clot went from his knee to his brain, and he died instantly!

DON'T MESS AROUND IF YOU SUSPECT BLOOD CLOTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have clots in right leg and have been on coumadin for over three years now as well as lovenox at the start. A pain to get checked once a month but better then the alternative. But other then a charlie horse pain a the start there never was any real pain for me just swelling of the calf and ankle.

I got a call at 6 AM our time (1/2 hour ago), his brother was taken to the emergency room last night because the pain got beyond his tolerance ... His Doctor is coming in to see him early this morning, they found blood clots in his upper and lower left leg ... He has had lower back problems for years associated with and attributed to sciatica ... I had no first hand experience (I don't think) in the past and am gratefull for those who responded that have ... I was calling him to tell him what I have gathered on TS.Com when the phone rang to let me know he is in the hospital ... Thank you all for the information ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Just my two pesos here to add info for thought. I got to where I could hardly walk several years back. Was hanging onto everything, walked humped over in pain. There was the sciatica suggestions among others. Finally saw a spine specialist. I had stenosis (go google it). It's an arthritic condition in the spine. It felt just like what you are describing too. Had a laminectomy (yeah, google that too) and fixed me right up. Then a couple years after that, the dang pain started to return in that same side. Ended up getting a new hip.

Moral to the story, always get a 2nd opinion. Spine doctor, without even looking at me advised me to get a fusion on this 2nd round of hurting. Glad I listened to the wife and got a 2nd opinion.
