I just got some old 30.06 ammo with black tips. Armor piercing, right? It was in with a bunch of old stuff. Some Lake City match from 1963 and a lot of mismatched stuff. Anywhere to see if any of the headstamps would indicate corrosive primers?

    Appreciate any help.

A good rule of thumb for US Military is, if primer sealant is black, blue, or dark green, it is generally corrosive.

If Sealant is orange or red, it is generally non corrosive.

If US Military ammo is made prior to 1953, it is generally corrosive. Some US Military ammo made begore 1953 is non corrosive, and some made after 1953 is corrosive.

Some domestic ammo, including Western Palma Match 30/06, made up into the 60's, was corrosively primed. This was in the familiar yellow box.

Much imported 30/06 ammo, made into the 60's, was corrosively primed.

It was thought corrosive primers were more stable in long term storage.

If any doubt exists, treat as corrosive.

TRAPPERMIKE.....What you have is the makings of the best center punch around.

Pull the bullet and cut the copper off and expose the armor piercing tip. Cut a 3/8" X 4" cold rolled steel rod and drill a hole in one end to fit tip and presser fit. Some will chip the first time used, just grind and try again.

A few years back I came into a large quantity of Garand ammo, all Denver 1943. This great Culver's site was what I used to confirm that all Denver ammo is corrosive. It's been a big help over the years. Phil E
