Since we have discussed the “best” or “most common” of many things, what in your opinion is the best trap load ever made. Were the old AA’s better than the new AA’s, were the Peters Blue Magic shells the best? I really liked the old Federal League load.

Personally, I like the STS 3 dram 1-1/8 oz of 8's for handicap and the hulls are great for reloading. I used to like the AA's in the same load, but I don't like the new AA hulls.

Federal papers are great, but I can't find them at a price I can afford.

    1-1/8 oz light 8s (1,145 fps) for 16 yd

    heavy 8s for doubles

Nitro 27s or Fed Papers @ 1,235 (7-1/2 shot) for 27 yd HDCP

The best load was easily the Federal Paper Champion in any configuration. Second was the original Winchester 2 3/4 dram, 1 1/8 oz. of 8 Super Target paper. You asked about the best trap load, not the best re-loadable.

I can smell those Federal papers even now. That's olfactory bliss.

Without question, the Winchester Super Target Paper in 3 dram 7 1/2s. Absolutely annihilated targets with a nice slow burning push. 48 bucks for a case of 20 twenty boxes wasn't too bad either. This would be circa 1975 to 1980ish. Jerry.....

At least thru any gun I ever owned, as was stated, the original Federal Paper Champion, 1200 fps.

I agree with claydstr, Fed Papers are olfactory bliss. And, for my 2 cents worth, are the best shells on the market!!! Now, on the other hand, Winchester Super Target Papers, as my mother would have said, stunk to high heavens!!!

I'd have to guess the shotshell/wad combination that revolutionized both new shells and reloads, the Winchester AAs of old. Hap
