Sorry for talking skeet but is part of our club. We're thinking of replacing our old western skeet machines with new throwers with bigger magazines. Any recommendations pro or con on particular machines? We've been told that adding a bigger magazine to our Westerns is a bad idea.

Our club uses Mattarelli on our six fields. They amaze me; never seem to break. That is what I would buy if I were going to purchase new machines.

If you already have PAT traps the company also sells a skeet model.

A club I shoot at in Northern Vermont has three fields with them and not a problem.

One of the reasons the club went with this model is they already had the trap model and thought it would ease maintenace problems.

A little noisy around the low house...

Like you, I like the old Western machines also. Dealers selling new equipment say they are not good and parts scarce. But, if you talk to the people who own/use them, they say they throw good targets and parts are no problem. The criticism is that they don't hold enough targets.

If you were buying new skeet machines, what brand would you recommend?

    Conflicting reports on Mattarelli machines.
Sounds to me that someone's machines need to be properly adjusted.
I think thats what we have in Tucson. Seem to work well.

We have 7 of the LaPorte machines, the newer design with the brake motor.

Once in a while a problem, usually adjustment etc, but nothing major.

Anyone familiar with the newer BeoMats? I believe QRP is the US distributor. Along with performance, I wonder how pricing is for the various brands. I notice Lincoln traps has a skeet model listed. I wonder who is using them?

if your westerns are working, why not just put a 500 target turret on them?
    click the link.
    save thousands.
remember, all car dealers will try to talk you out of your old car for a new one.
but if new cars were so great, why do they still have parts and service departments?
and who told you bigger turrets are bad.
let me guess, a beomat salesman. lol.

Missoula Trap and Skeet has 10 Beomats plus 2 spares. Very reliable, easy to adjust (not quite as easy as the Laporte for side to side adjust), you have to loosen 2 bolts to adjust for side to side, there is a turnbuckle for target height adjusting. Our highest milage machines have about 500,000 targets on them. We do an annual service on each machine that takes about 30 minutes. Pretty problem free beyond that. They are spring driven and they are not affected by cold weather. If the arms are in good condition they throw a very stable target in the wind.

crazy lazy world we now live in. i never understood why people whined about filling western machines. when i use to shoot the world shoots in san ant, they were still using single stacks. never had a problem. never slowed anyone down.
when we shot practice, it was just a given, when you were on sta 7, last man in line waiting to shoot went in the low house and topped off the machine. when the game was on 8, first man off 8 low went and filled the high house. everyone just got along and knew it was part of the game.
and what was great about this is, at no time did the game have to stop for 15 minutes while someone had to completely fill both empty machines with 1000 birds.
winchester/westerns still grace my 2 fields, and will under i die.
