Let's not get into the 7.5 vs. 8 sized shot debate, but we were discussing at lunch today after our practice session, what would be the best load for short handicap,(21-23 yds.) Not talking about custom reloads, just factory issue, so....which of the following would be your choice?
    A.) 3 dram equivilant - 1&1/8 oz at 1200 fps.
    B.) 3 dram equivilant - 1 oz at about 1200 fps.
    C.) 2&3/4 dram equivilant - 1&1/8 oz at 1135 fps.

    I appreciate your opnions. Martinpicker

I would try to pattern all of them to see which was the best out of my gun at that yardage. But If I couldn't.......I pick...(B)

Martinpicker, Its the 2 3/4 dram powder one oz loads that are 1,200 fps. The 3 dram one oz. loads should be 1,250 fps. I like the one oz loads at 1,200 fps. break em all Jeff

    21-23 isn't exactly the short handicap. 2-3/4 dram eq. 1-1/8 #8 Clyde

    Martin,

I would suggest you lock the trap machine for straightaways and stand on post 3 one yard behind your assigned HC yardage. Try all of your shell and choke tube combinations and see for yourself which one seems to work best for you. The combination that tends to break targets the best (hardest) would probably be a good place for you to start.

    Good luck & good shooting.

Thanks guys. There seems to be a near consensus that whatever a guy prefers from the 16 will work well for him at this yardage. Since I prefer the 2&3/4 dram load with 1&1/8 oz of 7.5s at the 16, I will try them at the 21. I have been shootin the heavier loads.

By the way, I have some Wal-Mart shells that are marked on the box..3 dram equivilant, 1 oz. #8 shot, 1185 fps...That is why I worded my choice B "about" 1200 fps.

    Thanks again, Martinpicker

Choice C is the winner and it will take you well beyond the 24 yard line.
