I have been driving for over forty years. One would think I would have noticed the little secret on my dashboard that was staring me right in the face the whole time. I didn't and I bet you probably haven't either.

Quick question. What side of your car is your petrol tank? If you are anything like me, you probably can't remember right away. My solution is to uncomfortably stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look. If you don't do this in your own car you definitely have done it in a borrowed or rental car.

Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the petrol station or put your neck at risk of injury.

If you look at your petrol gauge, you will see a small icon of a petrol pump. The handle of the petrol pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the pump. If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left. If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right. It is that simple!

About a month ago I was at a gas station near my house. A woman in a new Cadillac pulls up and asks me "Can you tell me where is tanky gas?" in a thick European accent. I tell her I live near here and have never heard of that place. She then says "No, no. tanky gas - where put gas for car."

Now I know to tell her to look at her gas gauge.

My wife's 2004 Toyota RAV4 has a little arrow under the fuel pump emblem pointing to the side the gas cap is on.

"Opposite side of the exhaust outlet"

OK how does that work with dual exhaust?

My 1997 Dakota has an arrow just under the gas gauge pointing to the driver's side. I am now curious to see what the other two cars - both GM - might indicate. Since I fill them both, I know they are on the driver's side, but I'd better check this morning to be sure. Fun post................

Mine has dual exhausts. Is that why the filler is in the center?

I rent a lot of cars. It seems like they are always different.

The gas pump is an international standard, and should always have the handle on the side of the gas filler.

If you can't figure this out, look in a mirror for somthing like a big "L" on your forehead. Then note which direction it's pointing in! :)

Is it true that if the gas inlet is on the drivers side then the auto was assembled in the good ol USA, If it on the passengers side the it was assembled where ever the hell else they put them together.

Evidently, some of you have the wrong parts for your car. Take it back to the dealer and tell them it is not up to standards!

My 2000 Corvette has two gas tanks, joined together. But only one filler which is immediately under the tank filler cap which is behind the tank filler door which is opened by push button in the cabin.
