I've got a couple of hours free in Kansas City MO...wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a great BBQ restaurant. I prefer rubs or vinegar based to the sweet sauces. Thanks

Arthur Bryant's Barbeque is IMHO not only the best BBQ in Kansas City, but anywhere in the country.

I think the best is the original on Brooklyn Street downtown, but they also have branches by the new race track, and by one of the casinos.

I have been going there for 25 years, and it is still as good as it was the first time.

The Arthur Bryants down on Brooklyn is the original. Its easy to find theres a sign just of Hwy 70. I always get the pork sandwich with fresh cut fries. They stack the meat about two inches high. I dont like there original sauce although they do have a sweeter sauce i prefer. They still use a wood burning pit. Arthur Bryants is probably the most famous BBQ in Kansas City. Gates BBQ is close buy. If your on the north side of Kansas in Liberty check out The Smokestack BBQ at 8250 N. Church Road just of 35.

Keep in mind there are about 70 BBQ joints in the Kansas city area.

    mt,

Welcome to the best barbecue in the world.

Bryants is a great suggestion, but there are many others.

    Gates

    Haywards

    Jack Fiorello's Smokestack

    Winslows in the City Market

    KC Masterpiece

    Zarda's

    Bates City

    The list goes on!

In what part of town are you going to be?

I'm flying in to the Kansas City Airport, renting a car and then driving down to Lincoln MO (Wenigs). What would you recommend as easiest to get to. We tend to prefer more of a rub type BBQ rather than a heavy molasses sauce type.

thanks for all the suggestions, we're really looking foward to this trip.

There used to be an Arthur Bryants in one of the airport concourses. Not sure which one.

Probably easiest to take I-435 East from the airport (the airport main exit road essentially becomes I-435 east) then follow I-435 east then south (it will turn south after 8 or 10 miles) until it meets up with I-70. Take I-70 eastbound about 70 miles to the Sedalia, MO exit (exit 78.) Head south on US Hwy 65, through Sedalia, until you get to Lincoln.

That's NOT the most direct route, but it is probably the easiest for an out-of-towner.

By mapquest, its about 145 miles.

    Good luck.

If you like the rub type bbq you may want to look up Big Bubba's BBQ in Olatha. I had a daughter-in-law that wouldn't touch that red neck stuff, I brought home a rack of ribs from Bubba's and she devoured 3/4 of it and I had to go back for more. I just depends if you want to go through KC or around. Olatha is on the southern edge.

If you're going down to Wenig's, you can also try KaeDee's in Sedalia. Depending on the route that you take, you'll go right by there. It's across from the Fairgrounds.

Since your going to Wenigs you will travel through Sedalia. As your heading out of town there are two BBQ joints. Dickie Doo BBQ and Kehde BBQ. Kehdes has a railroad theme and you can dine in a old railroad dinning train. When I go to the Missouri state shoot we stop at both these places on the way down and back. Always had excellent BBQ at both. Sedalia is only about 20 miles away from Winigs.

Thanks everyone, we're here in Sedalia. Staying at a bed and breakfast. spent the day getting measured for stocks for both of us. Eating tons of BBQ, thanks for the suggestions. Last night we ate at Bryants in Kansas City....wife absolutely loved the chicken and fries, sauces sure are different than i'm had before. Tonight we had KahDees, sweeter sauce than i prefer but a great sandwich and a terrific dark beer never the lessdh
