What is the best powder for a handicap load? The past several year I've shot all Remington Nitro's. I have reloaded all of my 16's and double shell's using 700X or Green Dot.

I'm currently using Remington Gun Clubs and STS hulls, STS primers and Spolar wads, ???Powder????..... I want a 1-1/8oz., 1,250 fps, with the least amount of recoil....Suggestion...

    Thanks

    Shawn

See above Hodgdon website for Loading data. If you want to duplicate the factory Remington Nitro Handicap Load, Remington Hull, Rem. Primer, Rem TGT 12 wad, and Titegroup powder 18.5 grs. They use the TGT 12 wad instead of the Fig 8 wad to achieve a good crimp with Titegroup powder. Hope this helps.

Recoil is recoil. If your load is 1-1/8 ounce at 1250 fps, you won't be able to tell one powder from another. Choice of powder will not affect that.

    I like Titegroup.

    Others like Green Dot.

    I'll vote Green Dot.

I have had good results with TiteGroup also but it can be hard to find.

If your using the Spolar Gold wads, PB will keep your pressure a little lower than Green Dot at 1250fps. TiteGroup as stated, is a good powder also. Wayne

You may want to take a look at Unique using a windjammer wad or the DR windjammer clone. Look at the Alliant site. Good load with reasonable pressure under 9,000 lbs at slightly over 1300 FPS. Unique is a very good powder and burns slower than the green dot.

Green Dot or International Clays. If loading a huge amount of 1250+ loads, I'd go to Unique or Universal Clays to hold the pressures down. PB is a great powder, but it's just too expensive with little or no advanatge over the others. My personal preference is usually Green Dot.

I prefer Solo 1250, but Unique is hard to beat for low pressures and high performance.

I have been meaning to try a small can of Herco, but since I have a keg of Solo and two five-gallon buckets of Caps loads, I am in no hurry to load more Handicap shells.

I have allways used 700X, but for some reason it does not seem to be very popular why is that? maybe i can learn something new.

Herco works fine, but in my experience, the pressure is so low it doesn't burn real clean. Shoots good though.

I tried all of the loads supposed to duplicate a nitro 27 not only in ballistics , but also felt recoil. I diddn't like any of them, green dot close ,but less recoil. Long story short 23.5grains unique 1 1/8 oz. cb1114 claybuster with chedite. Used the 11/4 wad because powder a little bulky fits good in nitro hull. Shooting friend said no good,I loaded in good shiny hulls slipped them in his bag. You guessed it michigan state shoot sunday handicap 27 yd 98. To this day Icant believe he didn't notice the different primers.
    Never told him.

Unique or WSF works well for me. Every once in a while I get the urge to throw out 1 1/8oz loads at 1250+ or so. These powders just get it done!

Thanks for the info on Herco. Back in the days of paper shells, it was dirty, but delivered the goods.
