My personal favorite defense gun has always been a Beretta Jetfire in 22 short. Over all the years I've been hiking I never leave without it in my pocket. Of course we all know too the first rule when hiking in the wilderness is to use the "Buddy System." For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this it means you NEVER hike alone. You bring a friend or companion, even an in-law, that way if something happens there is someone to go get help.

I remember one time hiking with my brother-in-law in northern Alberta . Out of nowhere came this huge brown bear and man was she mad. We must have been near one of her cubs. Anyway, if I had not had my little Jetfire I'd sure not be here today. Just one shot to my brother-in-law's knee cap and I was able to escape by just walking at a brisk pace.

I carry a backpack full of raw steaks. I'm thinking I can just toss the meat over in the bushes along side of the trail and go on my merry way.

That's a silly question, Bears don't need guns for protection.

Surely we've all heard of the bear hunting guide guy? No? Well, Novice hunter arrived one day and interviewed the guide and was very impressed with the his pitch and many photos of successful hunts. He signed up for the next open day.

On the day of the hunt, the hunter arrived outfitted with all the suggested gear and they were about to leave when the he asked a pertinent question or two. He was satisfied with most concerns but finally asked the guide if he was really going to go out with him but not carry a rifle of his own in case of emergencies. The guide replied by pointing at his high grade running shoes and said, "All I need to do in an emergency is out run you"......breakemall

Your plan fails if there is more than one bear. Always take two friends with you.

I SPOKE WITH SEVERAL DFG RANGERS IN AK BACK IN 1976/77. To a man they all said they carry a pump 12 gauge loaded with slugs.

All you need to do is hike with people who can't run as fart as you.
