No doubt about it! It's the .30-06! No explanation necessary. The others mentioned are very good, but none as great as the .30-06.

I prefer the .257 Ackley Improved over the Roberts and, unless I've advanced to a peak in Alzheimers, the Roberts (and therefore the Ackley) are 7x 57 Mausers necked to .257? I also favor the .308 Winchester but see the two choices for different applications, no?....breakemall....Bob Dodd

Elmer Keith did the early development work on what later became the .338 Win. Mag. with his .333 OKH round. It was his perfect cartridge for North America. Jack O'Connor championed the .270 Remington. Keith referred to it as an "adequete varmint round". Both are excellent.

You can't have best. There are too many different uses and all have certain calibers that excel.

338 at prairie dogs or 223 at moose don't work at all.

The 30-06 does more jobs than any other, and each task it does there are other calibers that do it better.

And I don't care for it, but it has to be the most used and probably best in that respect.

Gotta have a safe full. That's the fun.

ASK Carlos Hathcock, he used his 30 06 for hunting the most dangerous game [the kind that shoots back]. His story is available in the book "Marine sniper". The book is a quick reading account of a very remarkable man and his rifle.

If I had to have just one cartridge, It would probably be a 45/70. That'll stop anything on the North American continent. I'd hate to have anything less in the same proximity as a big ole bear!

The 45-70 is one of my favorite cartridges. Especially when loaded with black powder and bullets cast on antique molds. But I would not say it is the best all time cartridge. But surely it's fair to say it would make the list of the top 10 American cartridges easily.

all depends on where you are hunting and the distance you need to shoot. I have killed furry things with all of these. We have a .243, 30-30, 33Win, 45-70, .308, 8mm Mauser, .270, 30-06, 7mm mag, 300 Wby mag, and the .458 x 2 American. My favorites are the 300 Wby and the 458 x 2 American. There are a couple of AAs in the background for perspective

the 7x57mm is my all time favorite, its just about the perfect cartridge!! however, the good ole 30/06 is still what everything else is compared too, and for good reasons. more bullet choices/weights. but then the .280rem. is just as good. and if a short action is what your after, the .308win and the 7mm08 are the perfect choices. so there you are the best 5 cartridges in the world!!!!

Although I am extremely partial to the 7MM Remington Mag and use it for most of my hunting. I have got to go with the 30-06 you can load it for whatever, and do as good job with all of them. Very well rounded cartridge. J Woolsey
