Years ago when the US dropped the .45 and went back to a 9mm with the Beretta, the reason for doing this was over a Military base in Italy. The way I heard it was that our lease on the base was expiring, and the Italians were balking at renewing it. So in order to secure the lease again, there was some underhanded bidding, and Beretta got the contract for supplying our military with sidearms. Did anyone else hear anything like this. Bulge.

Can't say if the story is true or not, but here is the 'official' line... (As least as well as Wikipedia states it).

Realize there were THREE separate trials and the Beretta came out on top.

The change to the 9mm was to standardize with NATO...

They had a special about it on Shooting USA. The 92 beat all the competitors hands down. In the US test/purchase specs, it was required that all the guns be manufactured in the US by the third year of the contract. Beretta USA is in the processing of doing that.

I've always wondered what the average accuracy is on the 92's
