Surgery successful. C5, 6 & 7 fused together. Barfed most of last night and this morning. 26 hours without food because I kept barfing it up because of the narcotics. I'd rather be in pain than have nausea to the point of barfing, but I just bought myself a whole lot of extreme pain refusing any more narcotics. It's taken most of the day to clear them out of my system. But pain and I are old friends. There's rarely a time we're not together to some degree.

Sorry to hear of the post-op misery. Here's hoping today is better and that the surgery makes life more fun down the road.

    Good thoughts your way.

    Brian,

A successful surgery is always good news. Concentrating on that, hopefully, will relieve some of your discomfort. I, too, have a very recent success story but I'll not muddy the waters here in your thread. Mend well.

Just keep the long range target in sight and you will be back at it in no time. Listen to the Docs and do your PT. Good luck.

As a guy with more repairs and replacement parts than a '53 Buick ... I can agree with doing away with the narcotics ... you will heal much faster without them.

    Happy healing!

The pain overnight and today was really intense, but is starting to level off. I've been doing more getting up and walking, so that may have increased the pain while at the same time setting it up to reduce. No pain no gain.

I am uber sore in several areas not directly related to the operation. You get strapped down in some sort of a cradle to be totally immobile. This is because the slightest movement can wind up getting nerves sliced. Those binding really pulled the shoulderblades and upper back out of shape, as well as my sternum. If you have ever had a really intense charlie horse, bingo.

As for the pain related directly to the surgery, if you've ever had a kidney stone, bingo there too.

Been having a hard time sleeping or eating because of my esophogus, which was pushed out of the way for clearance to the discs, but also an air tube was put down it. My guess is with all the pushing on it the tube would keep it from collapsing. My voice sounds like a cartoon character. Likely the tube chaffed the vocal cords. The neck collar also prevents proper enunciation. Also hurts to swallow.

I think the worst of it is over. No doubt there will be some relapses of pain.

    Thanks for the kind messages.

For the curious, this is basically what they did. The main difference is my discs were hollowed out like donuts and a round spacer was inserted between the vertebrae, instead of square like this video.
