to slow down the bitching form those that can't compete with the top guns. It is like using a band aid for a broken back. Shows effort, but accomplishes very little, in the long run an exercise in futility.

I have been to many, many shoots and never ever hear anyone complain about not being able to best the Top Guns ... They just don't play the money and have nothing at stake one way or the other ... The people who do not play the money will still not play the money, nothing ventured, nothing gained ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

The reduction is a joke! In eight years, I've only shot 300 handicap targets, from the 20 yard line (average score: 75), so when I went to shoot in a match today, I was informed that since I had not shot 1,000 handicap targets this year, I'd have to shoot at a penalty yardage: the 24 yard line. I told them that I had received an e-mail from the ATA making my yardage 18 yards, and showed them a printout of it. They said that they didn't make the rules, and the printout didn't matter. I guess I won't be shooting much handicap.

If you don't shoot, you'll never get of of penalty at the big shoots, that is for sure! Your just gripeing, nothing in your post is the ATA's fault.

    870,
the ATA tells Bill he is on the 18, then the ATA...through its rules... tells the club he has to shoot from the 24.
IF that contradiction isn't the ATA's fault, then tell me whose it is.

It would have been nice if they told him that he could shoot targets only from the 18. HMB

Maybe he should read the rules????

BigM is right. It sounds like more than just Bill should read the rules. The 2 yd reduction does not trump shoot target minimums.

Isn't the main idea to get people to participate in the sport? HMB

    Bill Stern,

The only way that a club can impose penalty yardage is if the shoot program states that penalties apply. I assume that you looked at the program and that it does in fact state that penalties will apply.

With that said, your yardage is still 18; even if you shot at the penalty yardage.

The only way that penalty yardage would affect subsequent shoots is if you shot a punchable score from penalty yardage; then you would be punched from the penalty yardage.

So there is no reason to not shoot handicap, you just might want to attend shoots that don't impose penalty yardage until you register some more targets.

Code5, he hasn't said what shoot he is talking about that I could see. How can you blame it on the ATA with what he posted? How can you even nock the ATA for what he complained about at all? How do you know ATA told the club he had to shoot from the 24? Penalty is not mandated by the ATA rulebook.

I'm shooting my first ATA event in Tucson next month but must say its rather strange to learn that I'm being penalized by the shoot while experienced shooters are given reductions!! I understand why but still think it's a rather strange welcome to the sport. I would think with all the brain power and experience you guys could figure out a more fair way to welcome newcommers. Sorry, but it's pretty lame to try bringing penalty into the reduction issue. If those other shooters with reductions haven't shot enough targets, they will be in the same boat as you and everyone else without enough targets. As has been stated already, shoot at some smaller shoots were management thinks it's ok to shoot without penalty. It's up to us when we run a shoot, not ATA.
