See Rule XIII F 3 on page 50 for maximum allowed velocities.

How does the ATA enforce this rule. Does the ATA seize a competitors guns and ammo and have it tested? HMB

1290 fps for 1 1/8oz, 1325 for 1 oz, and 1350 for 7/8 oz. I doubt it would be much problem with the 7/8oz load, but the 1 1/8 or 1 oz loads at those speeds, or faster, would be uncomfortable over the course of 100 or 200 birds.

    Alf,

Only if you can stand the recoil! My backup load doesn't kick as much as those things do. Although, I've been told, my backups make good callbird/line loads.

The thing that's always made me wonder with these and previous "limits" is that who's going to carry around a test barrel and appropriate chronograph to determine any violations? With a homeowners chrono and depending on barrel lengths, chokes, barrel IDs, temperatures and so on, you're not getting an absolute result anyway. If, on the other hand, the components used are listed in books as X or Y velocity, that's hardly a reliable benchmark either. My guess is that the rules are there for the incident when there is a challenge made and a thorough investigation after the fact....breakemall....Bob Dodd

Easiest way to keep it legal and legit ... make it a rule that you must purchase your all ammo from the location hosting the registered shoot and if not purchased from them you will be charged $5 or $10 to have 4 shells randomly selected from your your reloads and while 3 of those shells are shot threw a chronograph for an average speed result the 4th shell is cut open and your shot measured for verification.

Other than that it is all on the honor system and only the honor system and you must trust your fellow shooters.

Remove the speed restrictions all together and watch sore shoulder shooting begin. Even the sporting clays shooters very rarely use the fast shells. 3dram 1 oz or 1 1/8 oz is what the majority of sporting shooters use. The better shooter will always win! a faster shell doesn't make up for poor shot placement, it just compounds the problem!

They had the same type of rules in skeet...I don't think anyone paid much attention to them - they used the honor system as well. Ed

The velocity rules are enforced the same way that the shot size rule is enforced. That is, with the integrity of the shooters. It works very well and no additional enforcement is required.

Since I've never heard a delegate suggest a change in the present rules, I doubt anything is going to happen. I'm certainly not in favor of unlimited speed. Just go to "games" some night and see if you'd like to be on the same squad - at the same shoot, in fact - as some of the ammo you see and hear there.

    Neil,

Could you just imagine a squad all shooting shells loaded with Longshot, 800X, and rainbow dot. It would be just like the KY State Shoot! Lol.

It is all about the Honor System! If you quiz a guy about his shells he will know what the load is off the top of his head. If he/she is going to cheat, it will be with more than 1 shell!

    ec90t

Thanks for the retract Neil. I don't think my keyboard could withstand anymore coffee!

In years past the management at the Grand has sold illegal shells to the competitors. I guess they do not have to abide by the honor system.

The ATA rule as it stands now is unenforceable. The rule should be changed to the NSSA rule which is weight and shot size only. That is something that can be easily checked.

As for Neil's comment on not wanting to shoot with somebody that is shooting boomers. Escort that fellow off the grounds for disrupting the harmony of the shoot. Another rule which is enforceable. HMB

Worrying about velocity and shell payloads is not a big deal compared to the many concerns voiced here about "sandbagging".... Ed

hmb, it caught my eye when you wrote "In years past the management at the Grand has sold illegal shells to the competitors." Can you provide an example?
