I don't believe anyone knows the real reason the tribe decided to close Red Mountain. That said the tribe made a decision years ago to put in the facilities to accommodate 150-200 RVs with water and electricity. Once they made that investment I don't think they would give two hoots who was parked there as long as they paid the going rate.

A simple procedure would be to enact a "Sur-tax" onto non-shooting campers....say an extra $1,000.00 monthly that will go into the club's treasury.

Either shoot or hit the highway!!

The bottom line is gun clubs are businesses or should be.

If you have any information why the club was closed then please post it.

Well, it would have been nice if they just corrected the problem. A cash deposit that could only be used for shooting, a higher fee, a punch card system, any of a number of systems, and none hard to implement.

I wonder if the tribe knows they pissed off the whole country or if they care.

So, how many days a week and how many months a year does a snowbird pay space rent compared to a shooter? I don't know but I suspect that a snowbird would pay more in a season?? If so, it is a business. Maybe the people with the advice might step in and take over and show them how to run it.

Mike If you look at the number of snowbirds at your shoots as to your non snow birds. You will see that the snowbirds carry the state over the winter months. Trevor Dawe.

This thread implies the reason the club was closed had something to do with having non-shooters camped on the grounds. There is no evidence that was the reason. I know from talking with our delegate that no one knows the real reason because the tribe has not responded to repeated requests to discuss the closing.

The bottom line is oneATAtime started this with thread about "lessons to be learned" and one of those lessons should have been "don't jump to conclusions".

Jerry, I believe it wasn't non shooters, rather people who shot very little while camped there.

I saw it that way myself whenever I went out. My AZ pal says the same. Lots of dog walkers and clubhouse sitters and no shooting going on.

    That's just my impression.

The ASTA Board of Directors and State Delegate met on Saturday (10-04-08) to try and fill gaps in the winter chain shooting schedule ... The results will be posted on aztrap.com as soon as they can sort everything out ... I heard it was a very long but progressive meeting ... The ASTA Board and State Delegate have to be given some credit for going the extra mile on this one because it took everyone by surprise and could not of happen at a worst time of the year for everyone involved ...

I went up and toured the Ben Avery facility yesterday (10-05-08) and the place is looking great ... They have 48 RV sites that are really spacious and appear to have all of the amenities needed, but they are waiting for a pump riser station something or other before they can use the sewers ... The fields (17 of them) are all well marked, the grounds are manicured and looking good, sun shades are all in place ... They had several teams of High School kids on the west end shooting up a storm ... The club house never looked so good and they have a kitchen but it was not being used at the time when I was there ... I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised if you have not been at the facility for awhile ...

Jennifer and Wayne were there picking up shoot cards, tokens and what ever else is redeemable on behalf of Red Mountain ... She looked like she was doing well and seems to have a upbeat attitude and her usual smile ... I don't think its going to be as bad as everyone anticipated a few weeks ago, but time will tell ... I got to see a few friends and figure I better start practicing so I can get some targets in this winter between bowling and car shows ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Lets for the sake of argument assume that the tribe did not want to have non-shooters camped at the club.

It doesn't make any sense to me that the tribe which owned the land and the club and employed Jennifer thought the only way they could bar non-shooting campers from the grounds was to close the club.

Insight,Why dont you sign your name to your comments so I can look in the aversge book and see how many targets you shot in the last few years? Charlie Hartwig shot410ga, If you think snowbirds are cheap all you are doing is showing your ignorance by making a statement like that. Charlie

I have no horse in this race and I am not from AZ. I do however agree with Jerry that if you are not sure that this is the reason. By sure I mean have been told by the tribe that this is the reason then everyone need to think before they comment.

As upset as the tribe may be as I understand it there may still be a way to work this out. Negative comments on the part of shooters especially those not directly related to Red Mountain. May just get this club turned into a shopping mall. Why not hold all negative comments until more is known?

This is a classic case of two people that don't know anything regarding the closing of the club injecting their prejudices into a thread and basing their conclusions on their prejudices.

These two have no factual basis for their conclusions.

I have been to the casinos many times and can see that the Indians are fast becoming business men and ladies because they are generating money hand over fist ... I go and visit my money a few times a year now that the shine and novelty has worn off ... I'm not sure about the reason or reasons that the Tribe pulled the plug on Red Mountain but its obvious they do not want to discuss it being as they have not responded to letters and phone calls they have gotten from many concerned people and or organizations ... I do not see the closing of Red Mountain as being the end of trapshooting in Arizona, just a set back of sorts that will probably have its biggest impact the first year or so ... I guess we will all see in the not to distant future and adjust accordingly ... The club was definately a Jewel of an Oasis in the desert while it lasted ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

    one ATA and Insight,

I'll bet the Indians closed Cypress golf course, because people just sat in there cars or club to. Obviously you don't have a clue.

Interesting.........Jerry, do you think there just might be a Casino pop up at that location?

A shooting club is not a moneymaker by comparison.

But with the recent economic disasters casinos may not be too good either.

I did enjoy the convenience and good prices there. It was a fine place to shoot. We bought our components there too.

The Phoenix area, for its size should have a lot more shotgun shooting opportunity than it does.

    Any entpreneuers out there?

My guess is there would be an extension of the existing landfill before a casino.

There is a casino north of the club about 5 miles and 2 more on the 101 freway.

    Trevor,

I was at Ben Avery Saturday (Oct 04,08) thats when they had the ASTA meeting to see what they can do about the dates that opened up ... I figure they will have the new schedule on the aztrap.com site very soon, thats all I can honestly tell about that right now ... To say any or all of the dates were picked up and by whom would be speculation until they post it ... I did hear that the meeting went very well if that tells you anything ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
