Anyone out there remember the difference between federal 209 and 399 primers. I have a ton of old components i am trying to use up and the recipe calls for a fed 399. It was before my day I think.

I believe they were the primer in the Federal Champion II hulls. If so, they were a tad cooler than the Federal 209s, about like a WW-209.

You might have to find someone with a Lyman 2nd or 3rd edition of their Shotshell Reloading Handbook. I think the second edition came out in 1976. I've got one recipe for the 399, and its a .410 load. I do remember Lyman had quite a few loads worked up with that primer in 12 gauge.
