WPT beat me to it. 2 years ago when those pics and the story started circulating it was "blamed" on reloaded ammo. No real first hand info on this even then.

In 2008, the folks on the Smith & Wesson Forum determined it was hand-loads because nobody imports Chinese .44 mag.

Wayne it was a email I got from a fellow shooter. Explain how it can be a reload. Im just scratching my head, unless it was a shell filled completely to the top with gunpowder.

Just the opposite of a shell filled with powder. What usually happens is a very light load of powder is used and the powder lays in the bottom of the case. The powder doesn't cover the flash hole so when the primer is ignitated, instead of igniting the powder colum and buring up the colum, it ignites all the powder at once.

In the case of pistols and reloads, the overpressure is from double charges of very fast burning powder. It happens with pistol ammo cause there is so much room in the case. Add to the that a bit of gun club lore and next thing you know, some guy is has put 15 or more grains of Bullseye into that 44 mag and that gun is going............

Best results in these big cases come from high loading density/slow burning powders, and with these you cant double charge any -cause you`ll have powder
    all over the top.
