Had someone ask me if I had ever reloaded or seen any data on a 1 ounce load using IMR 800X. If I read the chart's right 800X and Green Dot are close in burn rates. Anybody have any experience with the 800X in a 1 ounce load? Thanks.

800X is way too slow for any reasonable 1 oz load in a 12 Ga.

800x and green dot may be close on a chart but in reality they are not very close. That is why you will not see any 1 ounce loads with 800x. It's isn't a very good 1 1/8 powder but it can be used with heavy charges. I use it in 1 1/2 field loads.Jeff

800X makes a dandy one once pheasant load in 20 gauge hulls. It isn't worth diddly for one ouncers in 12 gauge.

Thanks for the responses. I had used 800X for some hunting loads but had not heard of any 1 ounce target loads. Thanks.

Had a fellow shooting at the club last year that mistakenly used 800X instead of 700X . Had his 14 yr old kid crying after 10 shots . Told him to get those shells off the line and I took 1 home and weighed it . Turns out he was dropping 27.5 gr . He said he likes using it for trap because they will eject better than store bought shells ??

According to Hodgdon's guide, the max powder charge of 700X in ANY 1 1/8 oz reload using ANY listed combination of components in an STS, Gold Medal, or AA hull is 20.3 grains. Hodgdon's guide also lists 26.0 grains as the max charge for 800X when put behind 1 1/8 oz of shot in an STS, Gold Medal, or AA hull.

Have you told the savant that loaded these shells he might consider getting and using a scale? OTOH, let me guess. He's one of those guys who thinks a powder scale isn't necessary because, "a #31 Mec bushing works just great for me!"

Told him then to get a scale but don`t think he bought one yet . All he has to shoot are hunting guns for geese and deer so he expects the heavy ammo to kick those hulls out . Doesn`t come often and probably this was the second time since that incident .
