Is there and difference in the receiver of a rem 870 between the 2 3/4 and 3 in? I know a 3in shell will feed fine in a 2 3/4 gun

The only difference is the ejector. The ejector is rivoted into the left side of the receiver.

You would need to get a new 3" ejector, a new ejector spring, and two new rivots. The two rivots are different from each other. Sometimes you can salvage the spring, but most times not.

You will also need to buy or make a special punch for hammering the rear rivot. Tis is a stepped rivot. One step is for the ejector and the other step holds the spring.

The use of a Dremel like tool with a small diameter cut-off whell works great for grinding the original rivot off from the inside.

The head of the rivots will be "proud" on the outside of the receiver. Thoes will need to be taken down some.
