    What is it?

I found this old box in my moms basement. I can't find any markings on it anywhere. It looks like it was built quite well but has since been repaired a number of times. Part of the latch is missing. My mom thought it was a tool box. Looks a bit like a military ammo box but wooden. It also looks like something a farmer would have made back in the day. I'm just not sure.--Matt

That is a Blacksmiths box for shoeing horses.

Thanks MK and all. The ones they show are identical except for condition. This one is rough shape. It is still a neat piece considering age. I sure thought i could see a the similarities of it and modern boxes. Think i'm gonna examine moms basement a little harder.

Wouldn't the box be 'dimpled' inside from the points of the bullets? Jim

<blockquote><I>"Wouldn't the box be 'dimpled' inside from the points of the bullets?"</I></blockquote>Not if it never held any ammo. I have a refinished oak ammo chest like that that was given to me at retirement holding a bottle of 21 year old Balvenie Portwood Single Malt. That's apparently the first time the chest ever held anything... and it's still half-full!
