    I think it's a light box. A lantern or candle goes in it. However I'm just guessing.

    The box looks like raw hide. There's not enough holes, unless the design is punched clear through, for it to be a lantern. That could be what it represents. It could be one of those vapor boxes. Heat and medicine in the box.

    They used to be a game show on in the 70's called "The Liars Club". They would hold up all sorts of unusual items and the contestants had to figure out who was lying and who was telling the truth.

    Not for embers...the bottom is solid wood. Close but no cigar...I'll give you guys two other clues:

    1. the sides have heart shapes inside of a circle.

    2. the wood frame gives it strength...solid wood on the bottom, metal top with holes and wood top frame.

    The next clue will give it away...

    I was thinking it was a food warmer but yes I see that it was a foot warmer now. It was used when you had horse drawn carages.(sp)
