This is funny.... What happens when an animal rights group tries to fly a helicopter drone with a camara over a live pigeon shoot. They should sell raffle tickets for a chance at it next time...

I can't afford to go to a pigeon shoot at the moment, but I would be happy to guard the perimeter for free. I have a X-Full choke with 1 1/2oz of nickle 6s that will send that plastic gyro back to Radio Shack.

Dan, I'd be happy to join you. I'm sure there are many others who would as well.

They flew the drone at 4:45 PM, the shoot was over by 1:00 PM, what was the point? After viewing the video, I'm not sure anyone hit it, it may have been flown into the ground intentionally. More video on WWW.WISTV.com

I agree with EuroJoe on this. I watched the video and it looks like they flew it into the ground, and if you listen to the voices there is no panic that it was shot down, and the last voice is a female saying "you got it" with no sound to indicate that it was shot down.

Next up,, swatting mosquitos is wrong, and mouse traps should be outlawed.

I don't know the flight regulations on remote controlled aircraft but it is illegal to fly a real airplane (or helicopter) below 500 feet over private property. Some enviro groups are notorious liars and would say anything to cause trouble.

It's not illegal to fly a plane below 500 feet over private property, it's illegal to fly a plane within 500 fee of persons or structures in sparsely populated areas. The 500 feet can be horizontal, vertical, or a combination of the 2. Minimums are higher over towns and cities.

Remotely controlled aircraft are generally flown at very low altitudes, far less than 500 AGL. I don't know if they have a max altitude or not.

I fly radio controlled airplanes at a world competition level. I have been participating in RC flying, cars, boats, everything since I was 8 years old. It is MUCH harder than it looks. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they crashed the helicopter on their own and blamed a "shoot-down." Helicopters, even gyro-stabilized helicopters are very difficult to fly. Without an expert pilot, it would be inevitible that they would crash it.

I just watched that video. The helicopter landed normally. They actually had a good pilot. He brought it back normally and landed it at his feet. You can see his control corrections on the way down. That model was not shot down, period.

Another thing, I would think that flying a remote control Airplane, Helicopter, etc., off of a shoulder of a Federal marked highway (U.S. 601 from the article, I think it meant State) is not legal. Why wasn't this brought up with the Sheriff, if it is in fact a Federal or even State highway. Jon

There are no laws prohibiting flying RC airplanes over streets or buildings. However if you hit something or someone, you are personally liable for the damage. Normal people who fly RC airplanes belong to a club (with a runway) and have insurance thru the sanctioning body for Radio Control hobbies, the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). Flying a model without insurance is just dumb.

However, since their pilot is pretty skilled, he probably has insurance and is just a hired pilot.

I'm no animal rights nut nor am I a hunter. Never really appealed to me. However, I would pay a large sum to shoot at that copter to watch those tree huggin pot heads scour the highway to pick up the pieces.
