Looks to me like it has a lot to do with health care.

"Under current law, the duties of the Surgeon General are to:

Protect and advance the health of the Nation through educating the public, advocating for effective disease prevention and health promotion programs and activities, and, providing a highly recognized symbol of national commitment to protecting and improving the public's health,
Articulate scientifically based health policy analysis and advice to the President and the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) on the full range of critical public health, medical, and health system issues facing the Nation,
Provide leadership in promoting special Departmental health initiatives, e.g., tobacco and HIV prevention efforts, with other governmental and non-governmental entities, both domestically and internationally,
Administer the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) Commissioned Corps, which is a uniquely expert, diverse, flexible, and committed career force of public health professionals who can respond to both current and long-term health needs of the Nation,
Provide leadership and management oversight for PHS Commissioned Corps involvement in Departmental emergency preparedness and response activities,
Elevate the quality of public health practice in the professional disciplines through the advancement of appropriate standards and research priorities, and
Fulfill statutory and customary Departmental representational functions on a wide variety of Federal boards and governing bodies of non-Federal health organizations, including the Board of Regents of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, the National Library of Medicine, the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, and the American Medical Association."

The Commissioned cops is part of the PHS. It seems to be people who are health care proffesionals. I don't know of any who are jackbooted thugs.

You can take off the foil hat now.

Ok HM,,,,what does the student loan program have to do with healthcare???? I just can't make the connection with how taking over the student loan program HAS to do with healthcare and the payment of doctors through Medicare does not....

    Bigdog,

One plank of the libs' long-range healthcare platform is the public education of doctors. The reasoning goes, if we can find a cheaper way to educate doctors, so they don't graduate with massive debt - they won't need to make 6 figures to pay it back. And then we can have doctors who make no more than a hairdresser ( = COST CONTROL) and get them out of their Mercedes and back into Buicks again, like it was back in those nostalgic, sepia-toned days of Norman Rockwell fantasy America the Communist Dahaub and his Union Bolsheviki pine so longingly for.

(You know...the one where the cute little freckly, rosy-cheeked kid sits there on a cracker barrel holding his mouth open, sling-shot hanging out of his back pocket, while the dentist pulls his tooth with a pair of pliers and only charges his mom and dad 5 cents for the job...when Healthcare Was Cheap...when nobody figured out how to make synthetic insulin yet, and when Aunt Ethel got diabetes, she got her legs cut off and came to live with you and drive you nucking futs for the rest of her [and your] days until you yourself died of a heart attack before age 60 like your dad and his dad before him, free of all that exorbitant innovation those greedy drug and medical companies have foisted upon us against our collective will since the days of the Big War).

    But I digress.

So maybe that's where they're going with the student loan thing. But hell, I'm not going to strain many brain cells figuring it out. It all stinks like hell to me.

a lot of legislation has ammendments attached to them that have nothing to do with the original legislation to begin with. It's been like that for a long time.....

Bigdog: take the tin foil hat off and go read up about how legislation is written up, brokered, and passed in this country before ranting on here about some big bad government conspiracy. *rolls eyes*
