I see that the Kennedy surgery thread is closed to further posting. It is probably the right decision, given some of the postings there. However there is one thing I'm curious about. The prevailing opinion seems to be that the Boston area has some of the best medical facilities in the world, including Harvard, Mass General, Brigham & Women's, etc. Senator Kennedy is from Massachusetts. Why did he choose to have the surgery done at Duke in North Carolina? Duke is also very good, but is it better than the Boston facilities for brain cancer?

It must be.....that's where my daughter worked until she went back to school. And that's where she is going to school. She only made a couple of mistakes in her life......but haven't we all?

Duke is one of the premier hospitals for cancer and so many other ailments and afflictions in the world along with having some of the best doctors on staff as well.

I also heard that it had something to do with his medical coverage, something about why go to Boston when his coverage would allow Duke. Now if it were you or I we would be at some local outpatient center out in the parking lot getting fixed by the ... well ... we would not be at Duke like he was.

When Pres. Reagan was shot he joked to the emergency surgeons that he hoped they were Republicans.

Maybe Teddy had to leave town to find a Democrat brain surgeon.

Why did he not go to Cuba, Michael Moore seems to think they have a great health care system compared to ours.

Ted did not need to worry about his medical coverage, he could go anywhere and write a personal check, but why do that when he has the American taxpayer to foot the bill for his Health Insurance.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that the system is in as dire a crisis as some(media)would lead you to believe. It could be cheaper and more efficent with some changes, but we will be in big trouble if we allow the government to take over and start to administer it.

    Pocatello,

I'm sure Mr. Kennedy went to Duke for his surgery because that is where Dr. Friedman is based. I wondered the same thing as yourself so I researched it a little bit...actually CNN had a pretty good article on their web-site a few days ago detailing why he chose Duke. The article (and Duke's web-site too) indicated that Dr. Friedman is considered to be the best in this type of brain mapping surgery (I think that's what they called it)...essentially the surgeon tries to removes as much of the tumor as he can without degrading the patient's motor skills. I believe the surgery is performed with the patient being awake. As you can tell, I'm not a surgeon, but I am a Duke alum. :)

    Tim

    BTW, I'm a republican too...

Big Heap I think if you spent a little time thinking about the comments that you made.(not a put down) You would realize that the statement "Teddy had to leave town to find a Democrat brain surgeon" is so far from the truth.

There is no way that Teddy with his support of the Democrats and a Senator for over 30 years would have to leave his home State to find a Democrat to operate on his Brain.

It is ironic that he went someplace other than Mass. For years he has championed universal health care for everyone else who would then NOT have a choice. In fact, perhaps the treatment itself would not be available to the ordinary citizen of that age.

There are no Demo Doctors. They want to keep what they make or at least part of it and not be taxed to death and have to pay ridiculous insurance rates.

I have never been a fan of the Kennedys but I wish Mr. Kennedy well. I am sure he has family that loves him.

    Jim-

The ranks are full of democratic doctors. I have noticed that primary care docs tend to be more likely Dems, and specialists tend to be more likely Repubs, but my methods are no where near scientific. I am not even certain that overall the Repubs outnumber Dems, but I think they do.
