    Global Warming Comes to Africa

"Eastern Cape records coldest weather in decades

    May 22, 2007, 18:15

Heavy rainfall and snow continued through the night in large parts of the Eastern Cape. At Joubertina in the Langkloof area, mountains surrounding the town were covered in snow. By late afternoon, the town was still abuzz with talk of the snow - the heaviest some of the younger residents had ever seen.

The mountains around Queenstown, Graaf-Reinet and Tsitsikamma were also blanketed in snow and by late yesterday. Traffic officials closed two mountain passes in the Graaff-Reinet area. Farmers in the Karoo and other high-lying areas, particularly in the north Eastern Cape, were trying to keep their livestock from succumbing to the cold.

The last few days have been the coldest so far this year, with temperatures dropping as low as -5 degrees in some places. The cold weather is likely to continue for the next few days.

    Ostriches freeze to death
The rain came just in time in the Little Karoo for the start of the planting season, where the barley is already ankle-high and lucerne seeds are being sowed. However, a small number of ostriches in the Oudtshoorn area have already succumbed to the elements.

Hein Jonker, the chairperson of the Agri Little Karoo, says: "Most ostriches can survive this type of weather for a few days but a few of the weaker and sick ostriches would have died by now… If the weather continues like this for a few more days, we will see a lot more deaths."

Ostrich chicks are the most vulnerable and farmers are switching to a high energy diet for the birds. Emerging farmers are also nervous as they stand to lose the most. Farmers are now bracing themselves for the next cold front. It is predicted to move into the southern Cape at the weekend. "

Sadly some results of global warming can be unseasonal cold. Ocean currents get confused/move or stop and normal weather goes ba zurk. I don't want to give algore any credit for anything however.

Quite frankly they can't tell a damn thing about the weather. Too many variables. Global warming is just that. Man has almost no effect on it period. The fires in California create more so called greenhouse gasses in one year alone than all the cars . So let's just get rid of California and be done with it.

It is all theory no hard proof of anything like the Gord head let's on.

The only long term studies done were in Europe and the results do not agree with the doom sayers that make their living off of the global warming hype. After all that is how the experts make their money. Come up with a theory and get the government to give you grants to prove them. You don't bother to report any findings that are in direct opposition to your slant on things. After all you got the grant to prove your theory not shoot holes in it.

Some things in life you can't control. And that drives liberals crazy.

What you know is that you don't know. No argument there. To say that man has little effect on the planet is ludicris. What we do may pale compaired to a massive vulcano or asteroid but CFC'S, acid rain, DDT, nuclear waste, rain forest reduction, many near extinctions and extinctions are clearly "OWR BABIES"

I'll agree that just to identify a global problem is difficult and to do something effective about it even more difficult. No simple answers.

What is simple to do is poohaah everything.
dem dare smrt people aint so smrt. i smrter and i dont kno

I surely don't give algore credit for smarts or anyone else for that matter.
Sh-- does matter though, more sh-- matters more, and sh-- will happen reguardless of what you and I think or do about it. Nukes or pandemics maybe the only things that can save us from ourselves. One way or another nature will check all populations.

    good luck and good night,
    not a liberal

The great plains of North America were created by the advance and retreat of glaciers, with the last retreat happening about 10,000 years ago. The ice sheets covering North America were up to a mile thick. How much cooling did it take to create an ice age? How much global warming to end it? There have been several ice ages and each time the earth warmed without man's help. Mankind is certainly capable of polluting his environment but we lack the power to alter climate. If an ice age was coming do we have the technology to stop it? If we needed to warm the Earth further do we have the technology to do that, we don't in either case. Monies being spent to combat global warming are totally wasted and foolish, the average citizen is being duped by politicians promising to save them and rally around a cause. Research money flows to areas where there is a problem, who then gets the research money? As if we know how much methane CO2 etc is just right. Read the details of the IPCC report, in it they point that livestock across the planet produce more greehouse gas than all the world's transportation. 6 Billion people have to eat. Just what average temperature would they have us set the planet at? Climate change has always been part of the Earth's history. Species that fail to adapt died off. Rather than trying to stop it our focus should be on how to cope with it. The global warming crusade is about money and political power,it is not about saving the planet or changing the climate.

It would take an ego the size of Algores to think that he has the answers to the weather changes, much less a plan to change it. God must be laughing pretty hard.
