A lot of varieties of AK-47's have been sold. The ones sold in the gun stores, mostly, in America are Madi or a different name. These guns can come from China, Hungary, Yugslovia (SP), and a host of other countries. These guns are semi-auto shooting the 7.62x39 ammunition. The same ammunition as the original AK-47.

It takes a bit of work and certain parts to convert the gun to a 3 switch selector: safe, semi-auto, and full auto. To legally make the conversion you need an FFL permit for full auto guns. Michael

You cannot convert these semi-auto guns to full auto unless you are classified as a class II builder. Even if you build it you cannot sell it. It might be classified as a dealer sample once legally converted.

bulgie, That is what the anti's want you to think. Illegal conversion is an automatic 5yr prison sentence, each violation.

The audio tape of the shooting indicates to me that the weapon was semi-auto. The media folks who report on this stuff are simply ignorant. They see Osama or one of his cohorts on a video and someone says "Oh, look. See that gun? It's an AK-47." The next time they see a gun like that is in some video taken by one of their compadres of the civil war in Sudan or the Palestinians or Hamas celebrating a wedding by shooting their full auto AK in the air. In the mind of that reporter(ette) they now see a similar LOOKING weapon in Omaha and put 2 +2 together and report that the shooter had an AK-47 when it just plain is not. It looks like an AK but it's definitely semi-auto. It's sad that those who call themselves journalists and are charged with reporting truth aren't.

Jerry, the penalty for an unregistered machinegun is 10 years.

And the firearm used in the Westroads mall shooting in Omaha was an SKS, which is definitely not related to an AK47, though they fire the same cartridge. The SKS is a semi-automatic service rifle. It was never designed as an assault rifle. Politicians have defined it as an assault weapon if it has a detachable magazine. So far we don't know if the SKS used has a fixed magazine or a detachable magazine.

Hey Shouldn't this kid be classified as a terrorist? The AK-47/74 is the preferred weapon of our enemy isn't it?
