United Airlines worker accidentally shot by passenger at Louis Armstrong International Airport

By Mary Sparacello, The Times-Picayune The Times-Picayune

A United Airlines employee was accidentally shot by a passenger who was trying to check a hunting rifle for a flight at Louis Armstrong International Airport in Kenner.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office received a call on the shooting shortly before 10:30 a.m. It issued Edward Deubler, 65, of Harvey a misdemeanor summons for negligent injury, said Sgt. Larry Dyess, Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Deubler had been trying to check the rifle with an employee at the United Airlines ticket counter when the weapon discharged, Dyess said.

The bullet struck a counter and a piece of the bullet struck the male employee in the leg. He was transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries, Dyess said.

The Transportation Security Administration said guns are allowed in checked baggage provided they are declared during the ticket counter check-in process, unloaded and in a hard-sided container. The container must be locked.

"We are reviewing the circumstances surrounding this incident," agency spokesman Jon Allen said.

This was no accident. It was negligence on the owner. Plain and simple. He should be thanking god that the outcome wasn't different.

    DB Bill,

    Stupid yes, SOB, probably.

    GO to jail - NOT.

The guy was a moron for sure, but to then condemn him to prison for stupidity is only playing into the hand sof gun banners.

    Think before you speak...
