    .

In the history of successful or failed presidencies, how important has the initial election results been ?

What does the initial landslide mean two or three years into the presidency ?

Does a landslide election accurately predict a successful presidency ?

Does a cliffhanger election accurately predict a troubled presidency ?

It all depends on your perspective.

You don't have to listen any more to the creep that lost.

    Examples: Carter, Mondale, Dukakis

And, from the other perspective: Gore

As I recall Richard Nixon won his bid for re-election by a "landslide" in 1972 against......wasn't it, George McGovern?

I remember the 1972 election well, for two reasons. First, Massachusetts was the only state (of course) that went to McGovern in the Electoral College, and cars all over the Commonwealth began sporting bumper stickers that said, "DON'T BLAME ME, I'M FROM MASSACHUSETTS!"

The second rememberance I have is that there was an (anti-Nixon) political button I had seen someone wear during the election season that said, "DICK NIXON BEFORE HE DICKS YOU." I was at a lounge in 1972 and had had a few, and made the mistake of saying that to the wrong person at the wrong time and almost got the crap beat out of me. Life's little lessons learned!

A landside sends a message, even if it is only temporary to the opposition.

Even if the Senate were retained by the Democrats, they would understand it's over.

A majority held House, Senate and White House, sends the message the people have given them a mandate. Get it done!

How about the other post-Nixon bumper sticker:

    Nixon 49----America 1.
