I recently purchased a trap gun with an adjustable comb and adjustable rib. What is the proper procedure for adjusting the POI? What is the relationship between adjusting the comb and adjusting the rib?

    Thanks,
    John

Many past threads on this subject. Essentially, you should first adjust POI using the adjustable comb. Raise the comb to raise POI. Generally speaking, about 1/8 inch of comb will equal about 4 inches of POI for many shotguns. First set the adjustable rib to basically neutral, then adjust comb to get more or less where you want. Once the comb is set, then you can use the adjustable rib to "fine tune" the POI if desired (front of rib (bead) goes in opposite direction to POI change). With a combo (adjustabl rib single and non-adjustable over/under barrels) use the comb to set the over/under barrel set to where you want them. Then replace the over/under barrels with the single barrel, and use the rib to tune the single barrel to the desired POI. That way, you are set to use either barrel without having to change the stock/comb adjustments. This is the procedure learned from AverageEd, and has worked well for me.

Can not answer the question without knowing what type of rib you have. Is the rib adjustable both front and rear? Or is it only adjustable in the rear? HMB

Lower the comb all the way.

Go to a bench and sight down the rib with the sight picture you like....you don't need to put your face on the stock to do this from a bench rest. Adjust rib until you have the point of impact that you want.

Adjust comb to where you can comfortably see the sight picture that you want and used to set your rib.

    Go shoot.

RickN - you really have to shoot at some paper to find the POI, perhaps you should get some more
experience before you advise new shooters on adjusting the POI of a shot-gun.

G'Bear, when I said go to a bench, I meant shoot it off a rest at paper to get the POI that you are after.

After doing that, bring your comb up so that when you shoulder your gun you are looking down the rib with your desired sight picture.

Maybe some small adjustments to stock after shooting a few rounds.

That really is all there is to it.
